Pembroke Public School Nurses coordinate the health and safety needs of all students to reduce health barriers and promote effective learning.RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.Provide emergency first aid to students and staff. Assume responsibility for the care of the ill or injured in school.2.Responsible for the planning, implementation and follow-up of all state-mandated school health programs.a.Routine [grades pre-k (or upon entry) 4, 7, 10] and athletic physical exams.b.Vision and hearing screening in all grades and whenever necessary.c.Height and weight measurements in all grades.d.Postural screening in grades 5-9.e.Communicable disease programs, including immunization recording, review and updating.f.Maintain and update students' cumulative health records.g.Maintain and report accurate statistics on all health-related areas as required.h.Maintain all medical aspects of student info system.3.Monitor and administer medications as per physicians orders.4.Review and revise, with the school physician, standing orders for school health.5.Monitor students absences according to school policy. Review for possible health problems.6.Perform special procedures for children dependent on medical technology that must be done by a registered nurse.7.Respond to, record and report health problems encountered, i.e., child abuse/neglect, drug abuse, nutrition and other problems.8.As a member of the IEP team, assist in the identification and education of students with special health concerns that affect learning.9.Research, evaluate and develop school health services and policies as needed.10.Evaluate and assess the health needs of students.11.Provide health programs and counseling regarding chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention and positive lifestyles.12.Order and maintain all health supplies.13.Act as a liaison between school, home and community agencies.a.Inform professional staff of individual student health-related problems with written parent consent.b.Interprets medical findings.c.Serve as a resource for students, staff, parents, and the community.
Make appropriate referrals to community agencies when necessary.14.Participates in staff activities and faculty meetings as appropriate.15.Participates in in-service, continuing education programs, workshops, and conferences to maintain state certifications.16.Consults with School Physician, School Administrators and others to establish, review and revise policies, procedures and specific programs for comprehensive school health education and services.17.Assists in developing an emergency response plan which is communicated to personnel, and students; assumes responsibility for in-service programs for school personnel in first aid, emergency care and current health issues, including sensitivity towards medically challenged students; maintains comprehensive school health records.18.Using the nursing process, collaborate with the parent/guardian and student, where appropriate, to develop and implement an individual health care plan for the student.
