Job Classification: Exempt

Contract Length: 10.5-months (210 days)

Job Summary
The School Nurse is responsible for conducting the program of health services as prescribed, to include assisting students to improve their general physical health by helping them to develop good health habits, identifying health defects of students and recommending further screening leading to correction and preventing the spread of communicable diseases in the various schools. The School Nurse is directly responsible to the building principal and the Supervisor of Nursing Services.

Essential Job Functions
Ensures that immunization records are current and that copies of the immunization records are filed in the students' cumulative folders. Also, maintain and safeguard up-to-date health records on each student in assigned schools.
Screens all children, within sixty (60) administrative working days of initial enrollment in a public school in vision and hearing to determine if formal assessment is indicated.
Administers medications and first aid.
Keeps logs of visits and care given, maintains adequate clinic supplies.
Administers Scoliosis screening to all students in grades 5 through 9.
Assists the Supervisor of Nursing Services in planning, developing, and coordinating a system-wide program of health services.
Conducts physical inspections, including vision and hearing testing on all students in assigned schools.
Provides follow-up services for students with health problems, which includes counseling with students, parents and/or teachers and determines whether or not corrections have been made.
Maintains clinic cleanliness.
Sends referral notes to parents to guardians by students, via telephoning, or by home visits when deemed necessary.
Assists principals, teachers, and other staff members to develop, implement and evaluate effective classroom health programs in terms of student and community needs.
Works with community agencies and health or science professional personnel outside the school to improve health care of students and other school personnel.
Serves as consultant to principals, teachers, and staff personnel and provides staff training on health-related matters.
Attends Child Study meetings and performs follow-up tasks.
Provides instruction to small groups relevant to health matters.

Demonstrates good work habits to include punctual and regular attendance.
Performs other related duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Nursing diploma from an approved nursing program, or an associate's degree in nursing; bachelor's degree in nursing preferred;

Experience: two years of experience working as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Certification and License: Current, documented proficiency in the care of patients with chronic illnesses and the use of basic medical equipment. A valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. CPR/AED Certification (Healthcare Provider adult and child level); Preferred: CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor Certification and National Certification as a School Nurse (NCSN).

The duties are primarily performed in an office environment, with no unusual physical demands. Pay: $43,000.00 - $72,000.00 per year
