Description

Building Substitute Teacher Preschool to 8th Grade

The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a full time Substitute Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. We are a Preschool - 8 progressive, independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 410 students. Since our founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School has grown in size, complexity, and diversity. This growth has been rooted firmly in the progressive values with which our founders began: immersive learning, responsive pedagogy, and meaningful engagement with the world. 

 

Summary:

The Philadelphia School seeks a creative, collaborative educator with a deep interest in progressive education and social justice as well as a commitment to personal and professional growth. This position requires interest and experience in integrating curriculum, careful student observation, and co-teaching. As a Substitute Teacher at our school, you will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on student lives, providing instruction as well as guidance, and fostering a positive learning environment where students can bring their best selves to the classroom every day. 

The hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Offer teacher coverage daily for homeroom and special area subjects such as Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education. 

  • Accompany classes to the outdoor education center as needed.

  • Facilitate the students’ transition to After School Programming (from 3-4pm)

  • Provide developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for all students, Preschool-8.

  • Maintain a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to learning.

  • Manage classroom behavior and uphold school policies and standards.

  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet individual student needs. 

  • Work closely with the supervisor to develop teaching ability.

  • Communicate effectively and consistently with school staff and administration as needed with regard to student progress and any classroom issues.

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, education-related program preferred.

  • Experience working with children in an educational setting, preferably in grades K-8.

  • Interests and experience in the following areas: diversity, growth mindset, responsive classroom, workshop approach to teaching literacy, constructivist math instruction, environmental education. 

  • Strong classroom management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to build respectful and supportive relationships with students.

  • Confidence in following a curriculum with a flexible teaching approach.

  • Desire to participate in school-wide initiatives.
