Pima County Department of Transportation is actively seeking an Equipment Operator II to lead and participate in the operation of road maintenance vehicles and equipment. Duties/Responsibilities
(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)
Operates a variety of equipment to meet finish construction specifications in public works construction and maintenance such as roads, parks, drainage ways, and wastewater systems;
Leads and trains laborers, equipment operators, and other personnel in equipment operations and in the successful completion of work;
Operates backhoe to excavate around high pressure gas lines, electrical conduits, and water mains to access sewer lines;
Operates grader to finish grades and base courses of roadways, checking and setting grade stakes for grading and leveling;
Finish-grades roadways and drainage ways;
Blade-mixes and lays bituminous road mix or asphaltic concrete;
Loads, secures and transports equipment on transport trailers;
Performs minor equipment repairs and servicing;
Participates in a variety of manual labor tasks;
May perform any of the duties required of the Equipment Operator I.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Knowledge of:
- traffic laws, local, state, and federal rules and regulations as applied to vehicle and equipment operation;
- reading and setting cut, slope, and grade stakes;
- procedures for maintaining public works projects such as roads, parks, drainage ways, and wastewater systems;
- public works construction methods, materials, and practices;
- products and treatments used in the surfacing of roads;
- occupational hazards and accepted industry-wide safety standards.
Skill in:
- safe and efficient operation, service and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
- operating equipment to meet finish construction specifications;
- leading and training other personnel in the use of equipment;
- operating equipment in constricted, difficult or dangerous situations for grading or dozing;
- interpreting and applying required standards and specification to situations;
- communicating effectively and following written and verbal instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of experience in the operation of heavy equipment/vehicles, which may include street sweepers, water trucks, asphaltic materials distributers, front end loaders, graders/scrapers, bulldozers, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, tractor/semi-trailer combinations and like equipment.
(Completion of a vocational/technical program from an accredited college or technical school in heavy equipment operations may be substituted for six months of the required experience.)
OR:
Two years of experience as an Equipment Operator I with Pima County.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):
- Experience in a lead and training position, leading and training other personnel in the use of operating equipment.
- CDL Class B with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement.
- Experience in the operations of various heavy equipment used in roadway maintenance and repairs with an emphasis in road grading and shoulder repair operations.
