Position Summary:
The Medical Assistant maintains patient flow to ensure patient care in an orderly and timely manner. Prepares the patient for the Physician or mid-level Provider and assists with treatment/exam. Perform and assist with procedures in accordance with the California Medical Board regulations for Medical Assistants. Assigned other duties such as laboratory procedures, maintains medical supplies and maintain treatment rooms and equipment.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Perform routine medical related duties:
a. Participate with medical providers, nursing staff, Outreach and Behavioral Health staff in a morning daily review and care plan for patients scheduled to be seen that day. Be sensitive to patient needs and maintain confidentiality.
b. Ensure providers have the appropriate paperwork, orders, referral forms, exam forms and any other paperwork that will help facilitate efficiency for the provider in advance, at the time of and after their patient’s appointment.
c. The M.A. should closely follow their providers schedule and plan to prepare patients to be ready on time in the exam room for their appointment with their provider. The M.A. should estimate how soon they will be seen by the provider. The M.A. should keep patients informed of delays that occur every 15 minutes beyond their appointment time.
d. If a patient is late beyond 10 minutes after the appointment time the M.A. should speak to the patient and inform the provider the reason, they were late for the appointment. The provider will decide if the patient will be seen or will need to reschedule. The M.A. will inform the patient of the decision.
e. Prepare Examination rooms for the Providers and assist in patient care
procedures as trained.
i. Conduct vital signs, allergies and healthcare screening questions that are indicated due in E.H. R. All screening information is documented in E.H. R.
f. Perform procedures trained to do including visual acuity and audio screening, EKG, ear lavage, assist in minor surgical procedures.
g. Perform clinic lab Point of Care tests (POCT): U/A, urine pregnancy test, urine drug screens, rapid strep screens, finger stick hemoglobin, blood glucose, INR, A1C hgb, Picolo CMP, lipid and other Point of Care tests as trained to perform.
h. Perform phlebotomy and skin puncture procedures in accordance with current California Medical Board regulations for Medical Assistants and hold a valid Phlebotomy Certificate or employee must acquire documented training and /or schooling and demonstrate proficiency for venipuncture at Pit River Health Service under the direction of the Clinic RN and Medical Director.
When the Medical Assistant collects lab tests from the patient they should inform and assist the patient with a follow-up appointment with the ordering provider for test results.
i. Prepare lab orders and process blood tests, cultures, biopsies and other specimens for storage and transport to outside lab for testing.
j. Perform administration of medications and injections including IM, Subcutaneous and Intradermal skin tests and nebulizer treatments in accordance with California Medical Board regulations for Medical Assistants once acquiring documented training and demonstration of proficiency to perform patient injections Pit River Health Service under the supervision of the Clinic RN and Medical Director.
2. Perform assigned daily, weekly and monthly assigned tasks;
a. Keeps inventory of supplies, equipment and maintains adequate supply for exam rooms, requesting ordering as needed.
b. Check medication refrigerator temperature daily and record. Report out of range temperatures to supervisor.
c. Maintain stocking of exam rooms as needed. Maintain expiration checklist monthly. Check that sharps containers in exam room lock boxes are changed weekly and as needed when or before reaching 2/3 full.
d. Prepare and submit the monthly and quarterly immunization reports as designated by R.N. / Clinic Manager.
3. Receive telephone calls and forward message to Providers and appropriate staff.
Medical Assistants will prepare requests for medication refills received from pharmacies by fax for providers by documenting the request for renewal of the prescription in E.H.R. The providers will be notified of the request for renewal of the prescription for their final approval and transmission of the prescription to the pharmacy electronically from E.H.R.
The medical assistant will notify providers of pharmacy notices of Prior Authorizations required for non-formulary medications not covered by insurances. The medical assistant will contact the pharmacy for required documentation needed and inform providers of the requested information.
4. Participates in meetings and trainings as directed by Clinic Manager: department staff, Infection Control Programs, Emergency Care and competency training.
5. Other duties as assigned by the Medical Director, Clinic Manager and/ or Family Nurse Practitioner or Physicians Assistant.
Required Qualifications:
1. Current Certification as Medical Assistant or obtain within 6 months.
2. Experience as a Certified Nurse Assistant may be considered as an entry point for this position.
3. Possess a current CPR card.
4. Ability to clearly follow Physician’s instructions.
5. Ability to interact with patients and understand cultural differences.
6. Must be customer service oriented
7. Have good knowledge and be able to make decisions under stressful situations, if necessary.
8. Must have or take Phlebotomy Certification training within six (6) months of hire.
9. Ability to work with minimum supervision and cooperate with other staff.
10. Preference will be given to Native Americans in accordance to PL 93-638.
11. Be willing to submit to a physical and pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
