What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fuel Truck Driver/Bus Mechanic 1 position at Pitt County Schools?

Position Title: Mechanic I

Reports To: Inspection Supervisor / Shop Foreman

Supervises: No One

Skills, Abilities Required: Working knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.

Ability to acquire skill in the performance of increasingly complex duties relating to the repair and maintenance of heavy truck/bus equipment.

Ability to learn the uses and operation of various machines commonly found in a maintenance repair shop.

Working knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical wiring and generating systems of buses.

Ability to determine the cause of and the methods to be used in the repair of improperly operating equipment.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for considerable periods.  Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally , and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Meet physical fitness requirements as outlined by Federal and State CDL/School Bus licensing requirements.  Physical demand requirements are for Heavy Work

 

Education, Training, Tools High school diploma or equivalent

Required: Commercial Drivers License (CDL Preferred)

Hand tools, storage device significant to complete assigned work tasks.

 

Term of Employment: 12 months

 

Probationary Periods: Initial employment 90 days

CDL “B” with applicable endorsements (P, S, T) 90 days

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Grind valves, turn armatures, adjust timing mechanisms, repair and replace connecting rods, camshafts, bearings, and piston rings.

  2. Repair, adjust, or replace generators, transmissions, clutch assemblies, as well as oil, fuel and water pumps.

  3. Repair and replace differentials, drive shafts, and steering mechanisms.

  4. Treat and overhaul fuel injection pumps, generators, distributors, and other related ignition, fuel or hydraulic mechanisms.

  5. Tune motors, install spark plugs and condensers, and check coil and lighting system.

  6. Mount/Dismount and balances wheels.  Repair and replace all brake components.  

  7. Repair and replace damaged parts of a school bus using acetylene or electric welding equipment as well as other repair equipment.

  8. Repair steering assembly by replacing anchor and/or king pins with service to tie rods.

  9. Perform general service operations on buses such as changing oil, lubricating the chassis, checking coolant levels, checking transmission fluid, and servicing the battery.

  10. Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning.

  11. Operate fuel truck.

  12. Accept rotation on the after hours pager service.

  13. Promote harmonious working relations with all employees.

  14. Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) school bus certification in a minimum of two areas within 48 months of initial employment.

  15. Obtain North Carolina Vehicle Inspection License.

  16. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Team Coordinator, Safety Coordinator, or Transportation Director.
