What are the responsibilities and job description for the Science Instructor - summer camp role position at Pleasant Bay Community Boating?
Pleasant Bay Community Boating is an organization that offers boating, marine education, and environmental stewardship opportunities. We are dedicated to serving all members of the community including those with physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities, as well as under-served communities. We offer youth and adult sailing lessons, community outreach sailing experiences, marine science camps and hands-on activities, and boat rentals. Our fleet includes Flying Scots, Sunfish, 420’s, Catboats, Kayaks, Lasers, Opti’s, and a solar-powered floating classroom.
Pleasant Bay Community Boating is looking for a seasonal Science Instructor to assist in operating the Science and Sailing summer camp. This summer camp takes place from June 23rd - August 15th with a Monday-Friday schedule. Instructors will work from 9 AM – 3 PM, supervising students ranging from ages 7-14 years old split into older and younger age groups. Part-time work assisting with school field trips is available starting in mid-May.
Responsibilities:
- · Assist the Science Coordinator in teaching indoor and outdoor lessons
- Help prepare the classroom prior to the arrival of students
- Help clean the classroom after the departure of students
- Assist students in the completion of assignments
- Bring creativity to the classroom! Don’t be afraid to have fun and be outgoing
- Help enforce PBCB’s water safety protocols and act as a role model on the bay
- Ensure that youth program participants are always supervised
- Report issues with boats, students, renters, curriculum, etc. to a supervisor
General Skills:
- · Maintain a professional and fun demeanor
- Work alongside staff and other instructors to make sure students are learning, progressing, and staying safe
- Friendly, outgoing, organized, responsible, hardworking
- Always model respect for the water and each other
Requirements:
- · You must be 18 or older by June 23rd, 2025
- Experience teaching (informally or formally) or working with kids
- Willingness to work with people of all backgrounds required
- Experience working with people with disabilities preferred, but open-mindedness required (we will occasionally have kids needing accommodation)
- Science background preferred but not required
- CPR/First Aid certified or willingness to obtain certifications required prior to the start of camp (offered at PBCB in June)
- Salary offers will be determined based on experience and relevant certifications, but will fall in the range of $18-20/hour
