What are the responsibilities and job description for the Editorial Director, Audience position at POLITICO?

POLITICO is in a moment of transformation. The company is growing in major markets across the US and Europe, new products and coverage investments are being made, and we’re re-shaping how we’re using data and audience thinking to drive our editorial ambitions and engagement. 

As a result, we are looking to hire a Director, Audience who will help drive our ambitions. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the editorial decision-making process and analyzing coverage trends to help leadership and editors make informed decisions on bets, trends and audience insights to enhance the overall audience reach and engagement across our website. They will help the newsroom understand the breadth and depth of coverage and make connections between politico.com, POLITICO Pro and our app. This role will be responsible for understanding our different platforms and which tactics to use to drive audience growth. They will work closely with editors on the morning news meeting, breaking news and planned news moments.

In addition, this role will play an important role in understanding industry analytics trends and maintaining our competitive understanding of social, search and other third-party platform referrals. 

What You’ll Do:

  • Help set and monitor KPIs and dashboards, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and relevance
  • Work with POLITICO newsroom leaders in crafting and monitoring strategy and KPIs across departments and formats
  • Build and monitor reports daily, weekly and monthly with key performance indicators and results
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze audience data, identify trends, and provide timely recommendations that contribute to informed journalistic decisions
  • Embed with key teams in the newsroom to understand their editorial priorities and how best to grow key audiences
  • Write clear and concise memos and strategic briefs on audience growth opportunities for the newsroom and company

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, marketing, data science or analytics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience working with data
  • Experience working in journalism
  • 3-4 years of experience in analytics, with a preference for content analytics
  • Experience identifying, analyzing, and using data to independently test theories, confirm assumptions, and measure success via iteration and with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Excel, Adobe Analytics, GA4, Looker/Data Studio, Big Query, SQL, Tableau, Google Ad Manager and other analytic and data tools
  • Knowledge of platform-specific data tools such as Emplifi, CrowdTangle, Tubular, Exact Target or other similar tools
