What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security Guard position at Port of Brownsville?
Job Summary
Assume responsibility for an assigned shift at the Port of Brownsville. Effective utilization of available resources is required for shift operations. Maintain control of traffic into and out of the Port in accordance with the Facility Security Plan. Ensure shift reports are complete, correct, and filed with the office as required. Maintain moral, integrity, and overall work performance at all times. Provide excellent customer service. A rotating schedule calls for 8-hour shifts. Day, night, or overnight shifts is part of the rotating schedule. This is an unarmed position.Job Responsibilities
- Regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the Port of Brownsville entrances in accordance with the Facility Security Plan to maintain orderly flow.
- Provide security for the docks when in a restricted status in accordance with the Facility Security Plan.
- Assist during special events, power outages and other emergencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bilingual (English / Spanish).
- High school graduate or GED.
- Possess a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
- Possess or must be able to obtain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Six-months related experience and/or training in security work.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations and policies of Port of Brownsville.
- Be able to gain a general understanding and familiarity with Port ordinances or regulations, city, state, and federal laws within the probationary period.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction.
- Ability to maintain logs of information.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Excellent and effective oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications, licenses or other qualifications required for a security officer’s position.
- One year of experience as a security guard; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
- Completion of a one-year law-enforcement related certificate from college or technical school.
Work Conditions & Physical Demands
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.- Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, dust, and vehicle exhaust.
- Medium physical effort including long periods of standing, up to 8 continuous hours and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
- Withstand prolonged periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting.
- Frequent contact with the public.
Additional Requirements
- Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening, a criminal history and a background investigation to be eligible for consideration.
- Must be able to be bonded.
