This position involves supervising a team of accessioning technicians, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintaining the integrity of laboratory information systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, lead, and train the accessioning team, ensuring the proper handling of patient samples and associated paperwork.
- Oversee the timely and accurate receipt, sorting, labeling, and logging of specimens into the laboratory's information management system.
- Ensure samples are accurately barcoded, stored, and distributed to the appropriate departments for testing in a timely manner.
- Review and approve sample paperwork and requisitions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Monitor workflow and productivity within the Accessioning Department, ensuring all samples are processed promptly and efficiently.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols, confidentiality guidelines (HIPAA), and quality control standards.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and assist with team development and problem-solving.
- Collaborate with laboratory management and other departments to improve operational efficiency and resolve any issues related to sample accessioning.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory bodies, including CLIA, CAP, and state-specific regulations.
- Assist in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures to ensure best practices and compliance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to specimen handling, tracking, and information discrepancies.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring equipment is in proper working order.
- Generate and analyze reports to monitor department performance metrics and identify areas for improvement.
- This position may require standing for long periods and occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs.
- Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with appropriate safety protocols in place.
- Occasional weekend hours may be required based on operational needs.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Technology) preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or leadership role in accessioning or specimen processing.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory operations, specimen handling, and regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP, HIPAA).
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities, with experience training and mentoring staff.
- Proficient in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other relevant software.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other departments.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory testing preferred.
