This position certifies veterans for benefits from the Veteran Administration and provides academic advising for veterans in degree, career, and transfer programs. The position also plans, coordinates and implements the operations and special activities pertaining to veterans’ services.

- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Three years of experience in education or a related field required.
- Two years’ supervisory experience required.
- Experience in academic advising.

- Serve as the certifying official for benefits sponsored by the Department of Veteran Affairs which includes the initial data entry, schedule adjustments, termination notification, entry of relevant data in Colleague, program changes, adding new programs, program approval, tracking enrollment in order to report adjustments in 30 days of the adjustment and maintaining files in a manner that complies with Veteran Affairs policy.
- Manage the daily operation of Veteran Services.
- Expected collaboration with extension center sites and coordination of services for veterans, military members, and dependents.
- Supervise and evaluate designated staff within Veteran Services
- Train and evaluate all personnel tasked to assist people receiving veterans’ benefits, according to federal, department, and college procedures.
- Consults with contacts at various colleges, universities, departments, businesses and corporations regarding course and program requirements.
- Create and process supplemental letters for transfer students.
- Maintains an active liaison relationship with academic departments and divisions on campus.
- Interprets and accurately communicates college policies and procedures for students, faculty and staff.
- Interpret, share, monitor, communicate the regulations to certify benefits, update programs, and validate data.
- Troubleshoots and resolves issues to facilitate student registration and documents findings and resolutions in STRK.
- Conduct orientation sessions for veterans and their dependents prior to each registration period
- Creates, discusses and implements strategies to improve student success
- Assists in the development and preparation of informational and marketing materials related to services and programing
- Maintain a working knowledge and thorough understanding of academic advising in order to facilitate student registration and processing veteran’s benefits following VA guidelines.
- Respond to and manage cases assigned through the Retention Alert System
- Refers students to appropriate on and off campus resources to meet individual needs.
- Access information on veteran benefit status and schedule time on campus for services that enhance the student veteran experience.
- Facilitate new student veteran orientation, student leadership program and co-curricular activities programming
- Initiate requisitions for program support
- Coordinate and assist in the development and delivery of veteran services at extension centers
- Oversee data maintenance on veteran services activities and assist in the preparation of monthly activity reports and other reports as requested
- Ensure compliance with regulations and changes affecting veteran services benefits and financial aid and interpret regulations to efficiently administer the program
- Ensure that college policies and procedures are compatible with Veteran Affairs (VA) regulations and accurately communicate and follow these policies and procedures.
- Ensure program changes are submitted in a timely manner.
- Acquire and update professional knowledge and skills by attending workshops, conferences, meetings, forums, and other professional development opportunities (school and community sponsored)
- Perform related work as required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of higher education institutions policies and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English
- Knowledge of advising skills
- Ability to communicate in a written and spoken foreign language is not a requirement, however it is recommended.
- Working knowledge with Microsoft Office software
- Ability to perform detailed work independently, as well as in a team environment
- Demonstrated knowledge in interpreting students’ test scores (placement, aptitude, achievement, etc).
- Demonstrated knowledge of Veteran Affairs regulations.
- Ability to make small group presentations
- Demonstrated knowledge of providing direct service to a diverse population including disadvantaged students and/or young adult students with disabilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

- Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
- As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
