The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking highly qualified applicants to fill a Senior Traffic Signal Construction/Operation Technician (Engineering Technician 5G) Grade G26 position in the OEPM - Traffic Safety Team 2 Division.
About the Position:
This position is responsible for performing work activities associated with the Design, Construction and Inspection of Traffic Signals and Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons at the office of Engineering & Project Management's Traffic Engineering and Safety Division. Activities include installation, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices, constructability review of signal design plans, programming the controller, carry out construction of the signals and other traffic control devices including flashing beacons and hybrid signals. The position also requires overseeing operation of the traffic signal during and after construction until it is adopted for maintenance by OHM. The position provides input and participate in the development/update of the County’s Signal Standard and Specification. This position provides supervision of subordinate technical, para-professional and field level positions as necessary.
About the Agency:
The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.
Supervises the maintenance and installation of traffic signals, Closed Camera Television (CCTV) equipment and complex computerized closed loop telemetry traffic signal systems, with master and local intersection control equipment involving computer logic, various communications equipment and solid state modular circuitry.
Supervises subordinate personnel in the adjustments or modifications of traffic signal devices, and all other associated equipment
Oversees the operation of traffic signals, and signal systems
Maintains records of signal phasing, timing, routine maintenance, emergency trouble calls, and equipment inventory
Submits required reports in a timely manner, including inventory records, preventive maintenance reports, and other associated administrative requirements
Troubleshoots and repairs complex microprocessors, solid state modular controllers (master and local), variable message signs, and cabinet wiring, with a thorough knowledge of testing devices and methods
Orders material and equipment necessary for day-to-day operations
Assembles and ensures traffic signal equipment associated with the construction program are ready for proper field installation
Assists in trouble shooting of any signal malfunction
Maintains a working log of all signals repaired
Trains subordinate staff in the emergency maintenance of traffic signals, in the field operation of traffic signals and associated equipment
Serves as a liaison with residents, businesses, consultants and other Departmental agencies
- Graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by college level courses in higher mathematics (algebra, trigonometry, geometry) and civil engineering
- Five (5) years of para-professional engineering experience, two (2) years must include lead/supervisory experience of technical and para-professional personnel
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Traffic Engineering Manuals and Guidelines

- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
- Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
- Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.
- Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
- Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
Salary : $85,000 - $125,000
