DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:
- Supervises students as they practice athletic training services during selected team practices and/or sports contests as permitted by laws, regulations, and policies
- Specializes in the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and sudden illnesses that occur in student-athletes
- Provides management and care of injuries to student-athletes as defined in the state practice acts, and in accordance with other state organizations and county regulations and policies
- Conducts an initial assessment of a student-athlete's injury or illness in order to provide emergency or continued care and determine whether the student-athlete should be referred to a physician for definitive diagnosis and treatment
- Provides care for athletic-related injuries using treatment modalities and rehabilitation equipment and techniques
- Evaluates student-athletes' readiness to play, or return to participation and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted
- Applies protective or re-injury preventative devices such as padding, wraps, bandages, and tape
- Maintains appropriate general treatment orders to be reviewed annually and approved by team physician
- Administers the VHSL Wrestling Weight Control Program and ImPACT concussion testing
- Acts as a liaison between family physicians and specialists, school administrators, athletic director, coaches, student-athletes, and their parents
- Maintains accurate records of injuries and care or treatments provided to student-athletes
- Develops inventory control and order supplies and equipment used in providing athletic training services
- Provides the coaches and athletic director with a list of student-athletes medically eligible to compete under county, district, and state rules and regulations
- Provides director of student activities and coaches a list of injured student-athletes and their participation status in a timely manner
- Maintains accurate records regarding environmental conditions that may influence the health and wellbeing of student-athletes during participation under such conditions, i.e., heat, humidity, cold, or other inclement weather
- Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with others in a continued, cooperative effort to ensure the student-athlete's best health and wellness needs are being met
