What are the responsibilities and job description for the R&D Engineer position at Princeton Nuenergy?
Princeton NuEnergy ("PNE") is a U.S.-based innovative clean-tech startup company spun out from Princeton University in 2019 and focused on the direct recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics. PNE's recycling technology produces high-quality cathode and anode materials from spent LIBs via direct separation, purification, and repair. Currently, we’re searching for an R&D Engineer to join our team.
As an R&D Engineer, you will be an integral part of our R&D team and assist the team to develop, characterize, and pilot-production of recycled battery materials. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background and solid knowledge in material characterization, analysis, and hands-on experiment skills. Understanding of varieties of LIBs-related materials (including LCO, LMO, LFP, NCM, or NCA) and electrochemical capabilities are highly preferred.
WHAT YOU WILL BE WORKING ON?
- Conducting battery material characterization and testing to understand, probe, and measure material components, structures, and other properties
- Assisting current technical and scientific research projects for recycling spent LIBs cathode and anode materials, including synthesis, characterization, and analysis
- Coordinating with external laboratories to handle the regular experiment and material characterization operations (domestic travel will be required, within drivable distance)
- Investigating, researching, and developing new competencies to help improve processes and products
- Participating in designing and executing electrochemical testing and experimental plans based on R&D projects and using appropriate lab equipment, industry best and safe practices
- Work closely with scientists to ensure efficient experiment and analysis
- Maintaining a clean and safe lab environment in accordance with PNE Lab Safety and EHS policies and procedures
- Demonstrating an open approach in all areas of responsibility, being a team player, and being able to collaborate with cross-function team members to work on additional tasks assigned (e.g., grant application)
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE IS SOMEONE WITH
- Master’s or bachelor’s degree with 1 year experience in material science, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, physics, or a similar field
- Strong knowledge background and hands-on skills in characterization and optical operations are a must, with prior laboratory experience in material synthesis, process engineering, or electrochemistry of lithium-ion battery materials is a plus
- Knowledgeable and hands-on in scientific experiments, tests, data collection protocols, and analytical laboratory equipment
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively communicate with internal teams and external collaborators
- Strong problem-solver, with an analytical and critical mindset with the passion and curiosity for continuous improvement and environmental sustainability
- Comfortable with working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, while handling multiple tasks and meeting deadlines
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- This is an on-site position in Bordentown, NJ
- Able to work in the research lab environment and wear personal protective equipment including dust mask, respirator, safety shoes, gloves, and safety glasses/face shield
- Able to stand, walk, and use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands or arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch when necessary for job activity
