Mechanical Superintendent
The Mechanical Superintendent is responsible for overseeing field operations on assigned project(s) to ensure safe, timely, and profitable completion. This role plans, organizes, and supervises mechanical construction activities while maintaining job continuity, maximizing efficiency, and ensuring compliance with contractual, safety, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide overall supervision of mechanical construction activities, including safety, productivity, material and equipment utilization, scheduling, engineering coordination, and contractual performance.
- Oversee and coordinate mechanical work activities, including piping (carbon, stainless steel, and alloy), rotating and stationary equipment, structural steel, rigging, welding (piping and structural), insulation, heat tracing, hydrostatic testing, non-destructive examination (NDE), fire protection, and coatings.
- Manage subcontractor performance to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, project specifications, schedules, and quality standards.
- Develop and manage construction schedules for mechanical-related subcontractor activities to ensure completion of contractual milestones.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, subcontractors, A/E representatives, and other project stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Project Management to develop and implement project procedures, work plans, standards, and documentation.
- Authorize purchase requisitions, field design change requests, and related documentation under the supervision of the Construction Manager and Project Manager.
- Maintain responsibility for overall project safety, including reviewing and auditing site-specific safety documentation such as Pre-Task Analyses (PTAs) and Task Safety Observations (TSOs).
- Complete daily field reports and photo documentation to track construction progress.
- Review subcontractor three-week look-ahead schedules to assess upcoming work activities and identify potential risks or conflicts.
- Direct and manage subcontractors to meet established schedules, tracking progress based on installed quantities and labor hours.
- Verify material deliveries for compliance with specifications and ensure proper storage, preventative maintenance, and temporary protection or heating as required.
- Coordinate with QA/QC personnel to ensure all welders are properly qualified for project requirements.
- Witness equipment setting and alignment activities.
- Conduct system walkdowns before, during, and after hydrostatic testing to verify compliance with drawings and specifications, and sign off on completed testing and system restoration.
- Develop and manage punch lists for incomplete or non-compliant work.
- Ensure the most current drawing revisions are being used in the field.
- Understand and execute the project scope, including management and documentation of field changes and change orders.
- Oversee craft supervision, workforce planning, and project staffing as required.
- Provide oversight of site material handling, tool control, and equipment management.
- Develop marked-up and as-built drawings to support record documentation, and assist with RFI responses in coordination with the Assistant Project Manager or Field Engineer.
- Read, interpret, and apply isometric drawings, structural drawings, and P&IDs.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
