Sr. Scientist

Job Description

Quest’s Molecular Genetics department is looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist to drive high-throughput, automated NGS assay development. Under the Associate Scientific Director, the Senior Scientist will use technical knowledge and a deep understanding of the relevant regulatory standards (CLIA, CAP, NYS) to autonomously conduct research project(s). This professional will ensure that goals and objectives of the project(s) are accomplished within prescribed time.

Responsibilities

• Leads projects, coordinates timelines, and ensures deliverables are met within the prescribed time.
• Develops, plans, conducts and records results from complex experiments within a specific product or technology area without requiring appreciable direction.
• Collaborates with colleagues in other disciplines in cross-functional project teams.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory agency requirements through documentation, audits and corrective action.
• Defines standard operating procedures and laboratory protocols.
• Collaborates with a development team to build a Laboratory Information Management System to interface with automated molecular workflows.
• Interprets results of experiments and recommends alternative approaches. Presents experimental results to project team members.
• May attend technical conferences or seminars. Maintains knowledge of technological developments that may assist in the completion of an assignment or lead to new products, processes or procedures.
• Effectively utilizes and applies advanced methods or technologies.
• Collaborates and interacts with vendors on significant technical matters.
• Acts as a liaison with the Operations team and the department managers to coordinate and accomplish the implementation of the new tests and modifications. Serves as a technical resource, providing operational hypercare.
  
  

Qualifications

Required Experience:

• Ph.D. in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or closely related field
• Minimum of 3 - 5 years of industry experience or 2 years post-doctoral research and 2 years of industry experience
• Deep technical knowledge of developing, documenting, and validating NGS workflows for CLIA lab testing
• Experience working with and optimizing automated molecular workflows
• Strong communication, analytical, and inter-personal skills. Proactive approach to problem-solving
• Deep understanding of regulatory standards and requirements (CLIA, CAP, NYS)
  
  

Preferred Experience

• Experience developing cfDNA-based assays
• Hands-on experience with automation platforms (Hamilton, Tecan, Agilent)
• Advanced data analytical and biostatistics skills
• Understanding of standard short-read bioinformatic tools and platforms
  
  

Physical And Mental Requirements

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms in the operation of equipment or instruments located in the work environment.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.
• Job duties are performed in a laboratory environment utilizing standard lab equipment.
• Some operations include the use of chemicals which require following safe handling procedures.
• The employee is frequently required to sit and stand; and is occasionally required to walk and stoop.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• Work performed in designated areas may require the use of appropriate safety precautions and protective equipment.
• Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and procedures outlined in the Environmental Health & Safety Manual.
