Fleet Mechanic - Fleet Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing and servicing complex mechanical, electronic, air, hydraulic and computer systems in county vehicles and equipment to ensure their safe and proper operation. Work is performed under direct supervision of the General Supervisor and is evaluated on repair efficiency and procedure application and to perform other duties as assigned.
All offers of employment are contingent on successfully passing pre-employment checks.
If selected, you with be entered and participate in a random drug and alcohol testing pool.
The probationary period for this position is one year.
You will be expected to hold and maintain a valid CDL class “A” license. If you currently do not have this class of license, you will need to secure a permit within 30 days after hire, and successful licensing as a condition of probation.
You are required to be certified as a Commercial Vehicle Inspector as a condition of probation and are responsible for renewing your certification every two years.
Upon employment, you will generally receive:
- 10 days of vacation for your first three years, and then 15.
- 1 floating holidays
- 10 regular holidays
- Overtime at 1 ½ used as pay if available, or as time off
- Sick pay at 4.61 hours per 80 hours worked

- Diagnose problems including equipment failure and repair with all fleet Services equipment, along with other governmental agencies. Perform detailed preventive maintenance as needed.
- Repair and maintain all non-mobile equipment such as plow blades, chain saws, pumps, conveyors and other equipment used by Ramsey County.
- Repair of diesel and gasoline engines and replace parts as necessary.
- Repair differentials and rear end assemblies, read manuals to obtain specifications, diagnose problems and replace bearings, gears, shafts or other worn parts.
- Repair of transmissions diagnose problems by electronic based diagnostic systems, and pressure checking, studying specifications and replacing parts as necessary.
- Repair electrical systems using VOM & Amperage type meters, factory and generic diagnostic software, and test lights, to include all types of systems found in light duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Replace parts as necessary.
- Repair and replace brakes, steering and suspension systems, cut brake drums and rotors, and replace broken springs and other parts as necessary on electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic braking and steering systems.
- Adjust, diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, repack hydraulic cylinders and rebuild hydraulic pumps; pressure check hydraulic systems and electronic diagnostics of those systems.
- Weld, design, cut, repair, lie out and fabricate specialized equipment from both formal and informal plans. Fabricate machine parts necessary for the repair of equipment by welding or using drill presses, grinders, lathes, power saws or boring equipment; fabricate and mount plow hitches and other special equipment. Develop fabrication project options in all types of materials including aluminum and stainless steel.
- Change fluids and filters by mileage, hours and times and check machine system functions as provided by the preventive maintenance schedules.
- Document and record all repairs, parts, labor, vehicle numbers or other required information related to the repair or maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform service and repairs to hybrid/electric class vehicles.
- Perform emergency field repairs to quickly get equipment back in operation or back to the shop for more permanent problem resolution.
- Perform setup of new vehicles and equipment and any other modifications needed to improve safety, efficiency and, productivity of purchased units.
- Test and operate all vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and proper operation. Perform required safety inspections on all vehicles, trucks and equipment, including DOT annual inspections.

Education: High school graduation or equivalent and completion of a two-year vocational technical program in automotive, Fleet Mechanic - Fleet Technicians, heavy equipment mechanics, Turf and Utility Technician, Marine Technician or a related field.
Experience: Two years of experience in automotive or truck maintenance, Turf and Utility Technician, Marine Technician or related field.
Substitution: An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications/Licensure: Ramsey County will offer training and equipment to help achieve this licensing, however, the cost of the license is the employee’s responsibility. Candidates must either have a CDL Class A license or be able to achieve a CDL Class A license as a condition of passing probation. Candidates have 30 days from the hire date to obtain a CDL permit. Positions in this job class are subject to drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules. Testing negative on required test is a condition of employment.

Candidates must either be D.O.T certified as a truck inspector OR must become certified as a condition for passing probation. Ramsey County will pay the fee for this certification.
The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:- Training & Experience Rating = 100%
- Physical Demand Test = pass/fail
The examination for Fleet Mechanic will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on the answers provided. A candidate must pass the training and experience rating in order to be advanced in the process. This is a banded list and all candidates who pass the training and experience rating will be provided an interview.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Fleet Mechanic - Fleet Technician. This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for one month or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been posted and their rank on the list.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
