Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site is the site of America’s first documented discovery of gold. Today, visitors can tour 450 feet of the restored underground mine, visit permanent exhibits on the science of gold and gold mining, and explore over 3 miles of walking trails. Panning for gold is available at set times.
Job Description:
Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site is seeking two candidates that align with the site’s values, is team-oriented, and has a passion for sharing North Carolina’s rich history with visitors of all backgrounds.
The part-time Historic Interpreter I position involves interpreting gold mining history to visitors, leading guided tours of the underground mine, teaching visitors how to pan for gold, providing excellent customer service, and assisting the staff with daily operations. The position pays $15.00 per hour, paid biweekly via direct deposit.
This position has an anticipated start date of September 2nd and will be scheduled to work 16 to 28 hours per week across Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Days scheduled change each week, based on the site’s needs and anticipated visitation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with special events.
- Instruct visitors how to pan for gold in the outdoor panning area.
- Lead regularly scheduled guided tours through the underground mine.
- Make sales on the cash register and restock the gift shop as needed throughout the day.
- Perform daily opening and closing procedures in the visitor center, panning area, and underground mine and maintain those areas throughout the day.
- Provide excellent customer service in person and on the phone.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
- Applicants must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, particularly extreme heat during the summer.
- Applicants must be able to perform physical activities including standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, walking up multiple flights of stairs, and lifting up to 25 pounds unassisted.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 years of experience working in a fast-paced environment.
- 1 years of experience working at a historic site or museum.
