What you will do
- Apprises Director of all activities, pertinent changes in internal/external market, any threats and opportunities in a timely and anticipatory manner and presents action plans for immediate implementation/approval.
- Maintains current awareness of staffing issues and meets standards and requirements in the implementation of Central Staffing, patient care needs, staffing and productivity plans, and administrative supervision of the hospital during the “off” shifts. • Provides leadership and operationally implements plans, programs, and activities. • Reviews compliance with patient care staffing standards as it relates to the care provided to patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics. • Develops and provides training programs for staff and leadership based on operational needs. • In collaboration with hospital team, conducts daily bed huddle assessing placement needs and identifying barriers to patient flow.
- Manages staffing office and related functions: • Provides assistance in the development and revision of descriptive materials for nursing units, staffing patterns/matrix and other department data. • Monitors work flow and performance. • Coordinates data information with Staffing Office for day to day management of staffing needs. • Assists in data analysis toward development of allocation and mix of parameters for staffing/productivity. • Evaluates float pool and agency staff member practice through collaboration with unit directors and managers. • Ensures records for agency/float pool are in compliance with department standards and regulatory requirements. • Assesses staff utilization and needs. Makes recommendations, as necessary, to provide adequate coverage for the provision of services. • Coordinates contact with external staffing agency sources including contract discussion, initiation and performance of agency staff. • Ensures agency’s nursing related expenses and variances are reported accurately and timely.
- Ensures the continuity of patient care during “off” shifts by managing the activities of the Administrative Supervisors and communicating to appropriate departments/administrators. • Provides assistance in the development and revision of operational manuals for Administrative Supervisors. • Collaborates with Nursing Directors to ensure Administrative Supervisors are providing the level of services needed to manage shift activities. • Identifies problem, documents resolution and communicates to applicable parties to ensure that operational issues are handled and resolved in a timely manner. • Ensures that applicable Director is notified as needed to ensure the timely resolution of problems/issues requiring immediate attention.
- Oversees bereavement activities for families and significant others of hospital patients. • Completes appropriate paperwork on death charts to ensure compliance with state, federal, and county regulations. Coordinates the completion of death certificates for all patients transferring directly from hospital to Shelby County Cemetery for county burial and files death certificate with Department of Health within department’s timeframe. • Notifies funeral home, medical examiners office and/or Pathologist of patient’s death and the need for arrangements to transport deceased. • Communicates with Organ and Tissue donation representatives to adequately provide their services to the deceased patients’ family members. • Provides direct support to medical staff in the provision of information and the obtaining of consent for post-mortems. • Monitors staff member’s compliance with policy and procedures pertaining to tissue tracing and medical records. • Contacts and coordinates activities with other services and support operations within or outside hospital. • Follows up with family members if desired funeral home has not been chosen. • Provides information to families regarding indigent burial with the Shelby County Cemetery if burial funds are not available.
- Collaborates with nursing/patient care leadership in compliance with iRESPECT standards and promoting patient/customer satisfaction to develop and implement activities, obtain information, answer inquiries and resolves problems.
- Compiles, prepares and maintains records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. • Utilizes computer and information systems to enter, format data and generates reports, statistics, computations, tables, charts and graphs. • Utilizes analytic skills and statistical analysis to aggregate data to assist with the identification of staffing patterns, trends, establish priorities and recommend improvement activities. • Reports trends in data which reflect system issues, establishes priorities and recommends improvement activities to Director and/or other responsible parties. • Reports nursing unit overtime and agency utilization to Vice President. • Provides timely and accurate reports.
- Provides administrative support for special projects and studies; collects and compiles data, performs statistical analysis and follows-up as requested or needed.
- Manages, supervises, develops and motivates direct reports to ensure that a capable, productive staff exists in the Central Staffing department. • Selects staff. Orients, trains and develops staff to meet requirements set forth in department plan. • Provides in-services and training opportunities for staff. • Evaluates performance and initiates and implements correction action as required.
- Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements to maintain knowledge of nurse resource allocation and patient care practices. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities. • Attends in-services, educational programs, conferences and other meetings as required. • Supports and implements the organization’s Performance Improvement initiatives. • Participates on department and/or organization-wide cross functional teams.

Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved Nursing program Required and
- Bachelor's Degree BSN Preferred
- Minimum 4 years experience Four (4) years progressing clinical nursing experience with at least one (1) year in a leadership role Required and
- Experience in a union environment Preferred
