About the Position The Registered Nurse is assigned clinical and/or managerial responsibilities based on educational preparation, licensing laws and regulations, competency and patient needs. “Patient needs” based assignments are made in accordance with the complexity and dynamics of the condition of each patient, age of patient, cultural, spiritual and religious practices, emotional needs/barriers, desire and motivation, physical and/or cognitive limitations, language barriers and the complexity of the assessment required by the patient. This includes the type of technology employed in providing care and factors that must be considered to make appropriate decisions regarding the provision of care. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Must maintain competence in BLS/ACLS after initial training. • A calm, pleasant, professional demeanor is expected. • You must have the ability to work cooperatively with all staff, physicians and departments. • Must be committed to Patient Satisfaction and Patient Safety. • Unit/Department/Service Area Specific • See Competency Checklist • Interpersonal skills are necessary to instruct and comfort patients and their families and maintain contact with a variety of internal and external staff. Recognizes and reinforces positive efforts of the health care team/co-workers. Addresses issues in a tactful and timely manner. • Experience is determined by work area and hospital to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit, departmental policies and procedures. Must fulfill established quality and quantity standards for the job. Education Required • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing Licensure • Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Indiana Certifications • Basic Life Support • Advanced Cardiac Life Support • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Demonstrated ability in taking patient vitals, performing injection/immunization procedures, charting and documentation, exam room preparation, infectious waste handling, knowledge of sterile techniques, triage incoming telephone calls, routine lab procedures and collection. • Oral communication skills needed to develop patient rapport discuss orders with patients and patient’s family, pharmacies, message taking and communicate effectively with patients regarding the course of their care. • Written communication skills necessary for charting and documentation. Must be able to write legibly and demonstrate spelling competency. • Demonstrated ability in handling patient confidentiality. • Ability to work with peers in a team situation. • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. • Demonstrate a functional and technical understanding of applicable scheduling and billing software, intranet and internet usage, e-mail usage and web-based applications. • Demonstrates the ability to connect on a human level, at a minimum making eye contact with and greeting patients, families, visitors, and staff. • Shows courteous interactions, including correct voice inflection and positive body language. • Demonstrates empathy by acknowledging and validating patient’s situation or experience. (“It must be hard to…” “It must be difficult to…”) • Appropriately sues therapeutic touch to calm and comfort. • Willing to work hard; offers to help others when own work completed. Sensitive to needs and workload of entire unit/department. • Shows willingness to take ownership; uses “I” or “we” rather than “they” or “them”. Blame is not directed at others. • Demonstrates compassion by ability to “walk in someone’s shoes” – get to their level, to understand where they are and what they’re feeling, and help them get to where they want to be. • Assumes accountability for professional growth. • Shows ability to use imagination, because if you can’t “imagine”, you can’t “connect”, and if you can’t “connect”, you can’t display compassion. • Must be committed to Patient Satisfaction and Patient Safety. • Assures that day-to-day patient care proceeds in an efficient, safe manner. • Routinely meets the culture of every patient every time regarding the patient experience by utilizing AIDET & KSBs. Position Specific Competencies Successful completion of Reid Hospital/ROSE orientation and competency-based skills appropriate for the Pre/Post Surgery Department. Individual performance and competency-based skills are maintained through ongoing assessment to competence and educational activities. Written evaluations are done on an annual basis. • Demonstrates basic communication skills • Demonstrates ability to work with age-specific populations • Demonstrates Patient Safety • Demonstrates appropriate body mechanics • Demonstrate infection control practices • Demonstrates ability to provide comfort and safety measures for patients • Performs or contributes to patient assessment according to policy and procedure • Performs or contributes to a Plan of care • Evaluates or contributes to evaluating POC • Demonstrates ability to assess and manage patient’s pain • Demonstrates ability to manage medications • Demonstrate management of IV therapy • Demonstrates ability to monitor & manage blood glucose • Demonstrates ability to manage emergent patient conditions • Demonstrates management of blood and blood products • Demonstrates management of urinary care • Demonstrates ability to manage chest tubes • Demonstrates management of ostomies • Demonstrates ability to manage Tracheostomies • Demonstrates management of NG Tubes • Demonstrate management of Central Venous Lines • Demonstrates ability to manage Wound Dressings • Demonstrates ability to document in appropriate records Work Environment 1. Normal patient care environment which requires continuous concentration and attention to detail. 2. Must be able to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. 3. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions. 4. The possibility of radiation exposure, care is taken to protect self when needed.
