Job Summary:
Animal Care Technicians support all aspects of animal husbandry and maintenance with our reptiles (including snakes, lizards, bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons and turtles) and other animals (including spiders, frogs, insects, and hermit crabs). The various elements of animal husbandry and maintenance include: proper feeding, provision for clean drinking water, proper and clean shelter, prevention and cure of diseases, and proper breeding of the reptiles and other animals.
Job Skills and Responsibilities:
Feeds, waters, and medicates animals according to feeding instructions and established schedules.
Cleans, disinfects, and organizes animals living areas to established schedules.
Setting up eggs for incubation
Observes animals to identify signs of injury, illness, or disease.
Provides general care for juvenile and adult animals; contacts supervisor/veterinarian for more advanced treatment.
Maintains records of information such as weight, physical condition, diet, feeding schedule, and medications given.
Communicates births, deaths, injuries, and/or irregular behavior of animals to supervisor.
Unloads and stores feed and supplies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Must genuinely enjoy animals.
Must be able to handle juvenile and adult animals as well as feeder insects such as crickets and mealworms and feeder animals such as mice.
Ability to work efficiently and thoroughly on repetitive tasks.
Ability to follow instructions.
Detail-oriented and consistent.
Reliable and dependable in performing job-related tasks.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent time management skills.
Works well as a productive member of a team.
Basic ability in mathematics, reading, or writing.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work in 85-degree to 90-degree temperatures and high humidity
Must have good motor skills for repetitive motions.
Prolonged periods (8 hours) of standing, lifting, and carrying materials
Must be able to exert 50 pounds of force occasionally and 25 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently.
Must be able to perform physical labor including reaching, twisting, bending, grasping, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, crouching, stooping, and lifting.
Ability to learn to use telephone, hand tools, gardening/carpentry/kitchen tools, electronic equipment (e.g. Scales and digital thermometers, computer equipment), power equipment (e.g. Power washer, commercial dishwasher)
Preferred Qualifications:
General animal husbandry and/or specific veterinary experience is desirable.
