What are the responsibilities and job description for the HIM Coding Associate position at RHI Rehab?

Summary:
Under general supervision, the HIM Coding Associate reviews, analyzes and abstracts data from the medical record to assign correct diagnoses, etiologic, and procedure codes as documented by clinicians Accurately codes inpatient,
outpatient and clinic charts to ensure compliance with correct coding guidelines to ensure proper reimbursement.
Uses ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS and CPT codes (as appropriate).
Essential Functions:
- Reviews, analyzes and abstracts data from the medical record to assign correct diagnoses, etiologic
diagnoses and procedure codes as documented by clinicians. - Accurately codes inpatient, outpatient, and clinic charts to ensure compliance with correct coding guidelines
using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS and CPT codes (as appropriate) to ensure correct billing and
reimbursement. - Reviews Impairment Group Codes (IGC) assigned by physicians and sends queries to physicians if the IGC
assignment is questionable or another IGC would be more appropriate. - Assigns etiologic diagnosis codes on inpatient charts for use on the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patient
Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI). - Works at an established coding productivity rate to be determined by the Manager of HIM and/or the Chief
Financial Officer (CFO). - Utilizes Uniform Data Services (UDS) and the CMS Secure Access Portal to transmit IRF-PAI data to CMS
in a timely fashion for inpatient charts. - Acts as a documentation, coding and IGC resource for RHI physicians and develops training and tools as
needed.

Education and Experience:
- Successful completion of a CAHIIM-accredited Associates Degree, Bachelor's Degree or certificate
program specializing in Health Information Management and/or billing and coding preferred. - Successful completion of an accredited medical or allied health education program also accepted.
- Must have prior experience successfully coding inpatient and outpatient charts from an
acute care facility, physician practice, or other healthcare organization.
