What are the responsibilities and job description for the Diagnostic Radiology Technician (MRI) position at Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center?

This Diagnostic Radiology Technician (MRI) position is assigned to the Indianapolis VAMC, Radiology Service. Employees at this level are fully functional as advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently at a level including special and complex procedures beyond the full performance level. Performs routine Magnetic Resonance Imaging procedures of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower extremities.

Qualifications:

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education:
  • Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
Certification:
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R)
OR
  • Advanced ARRT certification (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI),

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS 9:
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by :
  • Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  • Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  • Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
  • Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
Preferred Experience: 3 years plus of experience working as a Staff MRI Technologist. Must have advanced board certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The full performance level of this vacancy is 9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS 9.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing ( aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability.

Responsibilities:

Duties include but not limited to:

- Prepares Magnet for daily operation, brings system up, and checks all self-calibrating parameters and quality control checks.
- Cleans and prepares equipment surfaces in accordance with established infection control guidelines and equipment manufacture instructions.
- Performs routine archiving status checks and deletes data according to established guidelines.
- Reviews patient safety and screening history form. In addition, interviews patients for potential ferrous objects, implants, or work-related metallic injuries.
- Alleviates patient anxiety by informing the patient about what the MRl examination entails and what the patient can expect.
- Coordinates with radiologist for the appropriate protocol for each exam prior to scanning the patient.
- Always maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
