Job Purpose: To maintain surveillance of the school campus to prevent disruptions, protect property, and assure the safety of students, faculty, and visitors; to increase safety and security through education and positive interaction with students and staff while emphasizing intelligence sharing between staff and law enforcement; and to be a mentor to all students and break down barriers by developing trust and open communication channels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
1. Work closely with the Safety and Security Department and SRO/SRD/School Guardian regarding campus activities.
2. Assist and support the school safety team in maintaining a safe educational environment.
3. Maintain situational awareness and report illegal and suspicious activities on or near the campus.
4. Assist in the application of the Code of Student Conduct of Volusia County Schools and report any violations to the administrator of the site or designee.
5. Monitor student movement and behavior throughout the day during class changes, in campus hallways, restrooms, lunchrooms, school bus transportation areas, parking lots and school perimeter as assigned, including during passage to special areas for instruction or intervention, and before/after school.
6. Ensures students out of class have proper authorization; ensures students leaving campus are permitted to do so; reports unauthorized student departures.
7. Report areas of the campus in need of attention due to graffiti, litter, maintenance, safety hazards, or breaches in the campus security posture (damaged fencing, exterior lighting not working, etc.)
8. Provide the instructional and administrative staff with information regarding student behavior in the instructional settings throughout the day.
9. Assist in the supervision of student breaks as scheduled on the campus.
10. Monitor visitors by checking identification and maintaining records for all visitors, parents, and students entering campus.
11. Assist with student behavior control during special events, assemblies, lockdowns, or in-school performances, including the removal of students from a classroom or setting if necessary.
12. Assist with school investigations conducted by the school administration as assigned.
13. Remain available to students for individual assistance as appropriate or needed.
14. Maintain communication and respond quickly with other staff members as required.
15. Practice positive communication techniques with students, staff and parents on the campus.
16. Assist in security activities as assigned.
17. Records various information in security and monitoring activities, i.e., recording names and arrival times, vehicle descriptions, tardy slips.
18. Operates radio communications equipment in reporting and receiving information relating to assigned duties. 19. Reports truant students and all trespassers to school administrator, law enforcement, and/or school guardian. 20. Any matter in need of enforcement shall be reported to law enforcement for action.
21. School Safety Monitors are expected to report students in need of disciplinary action to proper administrator. 22. If a fight occurs, School Safety Monitors are expected to intervene for the safety of those involved.
23. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal.
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent
2. Experience in working with adolescents
3. Successful completion and verification of a teacher education preparation course or the Volusia County Schools’ substitute training and registration course (STAR) within thirty (30) days of employment
4. Additional training as assigned and determined by the district
Required Skills:

4. Ability to relate to students of diverse backgrounds and provide sound and effective human relations skills
5. Knowledge of substance abuse indicators preferred
