SALARY RANGE: $11.06 - $14.14 / Per Hour / School Year
SCHEDULED WORK YEAR – 10 Months
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Eighth grade education. High school diploma or GED desirable. Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions. Some experience in general cleaning of buildings and grounds. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Perform manual tasks concerned with general housekeeping, sanitation, and appearance of the school plant. Under general supervision, performs building cleaning and facilities maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. Work of the class involves varied building cleaning duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance work. Employees receive on the job training in the application of simple manual skill and use of cleaning and grounds tools and equipment, and supplies to clean interior of buildings and maintain grounds. Employees who possess the appropriate certificate may be assigned responsibility for checking or operating heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment. Employees in these classes are considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.
- Cleans and maintains a variety of other surfaces such as ceilings, chalkboards, counter and table tops, lockers, etc.(*)
- Comply with all regulatory mandates.
- Assists school staff by making deliveries to classrooms, moving furniture and other heavy objects between rooms and performing other manual or strenuous tasks. (*)
- Responsible for overall condition of building and grounds.
- Order and maintain building supplies and maintenance of supply budget.
- Operates power mower in cutting lawns and cleans up rubbish from grounds and adjacent areas. (*)
- Dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, buffs and cleans floors, carpets, hallways classrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, large group rooms, and office space(*)
- Cleans and washes walls, light fixtures, blinds, windows, restrooms, clinic, water fountains and vacuums hallways. (*)
- Replaces light bulbs. (*)
- Responsible for opening and/or closing building. (*)
- The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by such employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law, board policy administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Knowledge of the methods, materials and practices of building and grounds work; ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment; including auto scrubbers, and burnish machine, uses personal protective equipment and other safety tools and practices; monitors building spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment; possesses a basic knowledge of emergency response procedures. Has positive attitude toward job and clientele, conducts her/her in a professional and ethical manner, respects the values of confidentiality and integrity, has the ability to work independently, organize, and use time effectively, has the ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changing circumstances, shows initiative, but is also willing to take and follow direction, works within the procedures and systems in the school community, dresses appropriately for a school setting, provides strong leadership to custodial staff (good organizational skills, delegation skills, motivational skills), works cooperatively with others, and has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, must possess knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations, must have a solid knowledge of the utilization and care of materials and equipment used in the performance of his/her responsibilities, be able to operate all cleaning equipment, be able to use basic tools for maintenance such as ladders, tools, etc. be able to safely work with cleaning chemicals and refuse
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sufficient physical strength and ability to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and to perform manual labor. Nature of work is repetitive and requires sustained physical effort and involves some heavy work in moving or lifting furniture and equipment with some exposure to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional overtime or night work required.
