What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Teacher position at Ridgefield Academy?
Position Overview:
Ridgefield Academy is looking for assistant teachers to join our preschool and lower school. The ideal candidate will be someone who is flexible, approachable and has a positive attitude who loves working with young students. In this role you will assist the head teacher by implementing the planned activities and lesson plans for the academic year using the framework of the curriculum for the appropriate grade level and subject matter. The assistant teacher must be able to effectively support the head teacher as well as teach students through a variety of methods and use positive encouragement, supporting the mission of the school and the curriculum. The assistant teacher will substitute for the head teacher in their absence as needed.
Job Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
- Assist the classroom teacher by implementing the planned activities and lesson plans that support the children’s age-appropriate development
- Prepare materials and classroom set-up for class activities and lessons
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers
- Enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom you are responsible
- Use appropriate language, interactions, and positive discipline and models positive behavior
- Actively participates in large and small group activities and provides assistance and support during specials
- Monitor children to ensure safety at all times, complying with all policies and procedures
- Supervise children appropriately, including monitoring children during indoor and outdoor recess
- Maintains confidentiality of students and families and directs parent questions about students to the head teacher
- Observe and evaluate students’ academic performance and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and help prepare progress reports as needed
- Perform other duties outside of the classroom including supervising students in specials, at lunch tables and helping students at arrival and dismissal times
- Participate in/attend school events outside of the regular academic day
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree of in education from accredited university
- At least 2 years of classroom teaching experience
- Ability to work and move around with young, active children which includes regular bending, kneeling and stretching
- Ability to use technology and experience with Microsoft Suite
