JOB SUMMARY: The Reading Specialist’s purpose is to improve student literacy outcomes through collaboration with district and school leadership, data-driven decision making, coaching and professional development of teachers on evidence-based programs and instructional strategies, and effective communication with the school community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least five (5) years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level.
- Must be eligible for Maryland State Teacher Certification.
- A valid Maryland certificate as a Reading Specialist with a Master's Degree in reading, or equivalent coursework, is required. Current enrollment in a program of study to obtain Reading Specialist certification is acceptable.
- Knowledge of current research and best practices in reading/language arts assessments, curriculum, and instruction.
- Demonstrated initiative and leadership in the teaching of elementary reading, including knowledge of current ELA standards, methodologies, and instructional interventions.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient technology skills including for presentations, data analysis, and reporting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supports teachers in the implementation of best practices through coaching, reviewing student work, modeling, co-teaching, and providing non-evaluative feedback in response to classroom visits.
- Assists in development and implementation of the PreK-5 standards-driven reading program (curriculum, materials, and assessments).
- Provides instructional leadership to teacher teams during school-based content meetings.
- Collects, interprets, and utilizes formative and summative assessment data as part of a school leadership team to monitor progress toward school improvement goals; uses available data to monitor the growth of all students on district and state assessments.
- In coordination with Reading Intervention Teacher(s), administration, and supervisor, collaborates to monitor tiered supports, including reading intervention programs. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to; scheduling, maintaining and securing materials, monitoring implementation and teacher paperwork, classroom coaching, as well as school and county leadership with intervention training.
- Assists in monitoring the implementation of county literacy programs and initiatives with integrity; collaborates with the Reading Supervisor and other Reading Specialists to develop and deliver professional learning in alignment with the Maryland Professional Development Standards.
- Makes provision for availability to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day (e.g. before/after school programs) when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms and for additional hourly compensation.
- Consistently exhibits a positive attitude, a sense of efficacy, and a commitment to Caroline County Public Schools when collaborating within and outside of the school community.
- Maintains professional work habits.
- Perform other duties as required by the Supervisor of Instruction/Principal
PAY & HOURS: This position is a 10.5 month position with a minimum of 37.5 hours per week. Caroline County Board of Education, Teacher Salary Scale. Placement on the appropriate salary lane/step will be based on experience, skills and abilities related to this position.
