Senior Geotechnical Engineer (Long-range – South Wall)

Senior Geotechnical Engineer (Long-range – South Wall) (Kennecott Utah Copper LLC, South Jordan, UT): Perform geotechnical engineering tasks to ensure safety and business objectives are achieved for Bingham Canyon Mine’s South wall. Develop study reporting and prepare material for technical reviews. Work with short-range and mid-range geotechnical teams to collect, analyze and model rock mass and monitoring data to develop orebody knowledge for purposes of excavation stability and mine design optimization. Orebody knowledge activities, including geotechnical drill hole design, core logging QA/QC coordination, database maintenance. Manage risks and opportunities associated with growth projects specific to Bingham Canyon Mine’s South wall, including East extension and Slice 2 optimization. Manage and mitigate risk for large scale instabilities and their possible financial impacts to mine plans. Perform and facilitate risk assessments of long-term mining plans. Work closely with Rio Tinto copper group to ensure appropriate alignment on projects with geotechnical leading practices across Rio Tinto. Maintain, review, and continuously improve geotechnical design processes. Implement study scopes by managing schedule and budget. Provide technical direction and feedback on internal and consultant geotechnical design and analysis. Coordinate with external reviewers, including independent reviewers. Regular interaction with product group technical for major hazard management and with global Rio Tinto Geotech community via working groups.

Full time employment, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field, and 8 years of related work experience, out of which 5 years must be post-bachelor's, progressive related work experience in the fields of geotechnical or geological engineering.

Of the required experience, must have 8 years of experience in each of the following:

• Working in open pit mine environment;
• Conducting geotechnical design reviews;
• Experience working with slope monitoring systems, which including radars, prisms, GPS, and downhole equipment;
• Interpreting structural geology data, rock mass characterization data, and slope monitoring data to develop conceptual models of failure mechanisms.
• Rock mass characterization experience, including investigation of rock types and geological contacts, structural orientations, rock mass and geological strength index ratings, slope
  geometry conformance, hydrogeology and slope wall performance;
• Rock and soil mechanics laboratory testing and Structured Query Language (SQL) based database management for rock mass strengths;
• Data collection methods, including geotechnical cell mapping and geotechnical core logging;
• Making geotechnical recommendations on the safety and slope performance of an open pit;
• Providing project management, including definition, planning and implementation;
• Database management, including design, QA/QC monitoring and analysis;
• Applying the knowledge of dewatering/depressurization to open pit mine design; and
• Utilizing 3D modelling packages, including MineSight and Leapfrog.

Of the required experience, must have 5 years of experience in each of the following:

• 3D stability modelling and failure mechanisms, including Rocscience and FLAC3D;
• Interpreting Kinematic and Discrete Fracture Network analysis in a fractured rockmass;
• Utilizing orebody knowledge and strategic mine planning and their relationship with geotechnical stability models;
• Utilizing slope failure runout analysis methods and tools/software, including DAN3D, 3D Particle Flow Code (PFC) modelling and Fahrboschung; and
• Risk assessment and hazard management for long-term mine plans.
