We are looking for a Technician- Reverse Osmosis Plant Operator:

Rio Tinto Kennecott has a 40-year commitment to supply drinking water to the Jordan Valley Water Conservative District via the Bingham Canyon Water Treatment Plant (BCWTP). The BCWTP is one of the states largest reverse osmosis (RO) plant. The plant’s operation falls within RTK’s land and water management group which has water management responsibilities across the company. To fully leverage the synergisms within the group, the BCWTP operators are expected to support the broader water management goals of Rio Tinto - Kennecott. In addition to the BCWTP, RTK has other water systems. The BCWTP operators will support these systems from a technical and practical standpoint. Additionally, water treatment is required for RTK’s operations, and the BCWTP operators will support these efforts with a focus on optimal and sustainable production.

In general, the duties of the Reverse Osmosis Plant Operator are to perform day to day operation and maintenance functions required for RTK’s Bingham Canyon Water Treatment Plant (BCWTP). The operators will also assist with strategic planning for the BCWTP and support RTK’s overall water management. Duties and accountabilities include:

  • Operate the BCWTP as sole operator on shift
    • Monitor data acquisition screens and historical data, and have ability to interpret them
    • Regulate influents/ effluents, source water/ product water, feed water and permeate
    • Perform consistent high quality laboratory work
    • Perform membrane cleaning
    • Make chemical dose adjustments in response to changing water quality parameters
    • Sample and analyze influents/effluents, source water/product water, feedwater and permeate
    • Ensure all required local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the production of potable water are met
  • Order parts and supplies via SAP
  • Support the BCWTP and other RTK water treatment systems by assisting with the development of strategic projects
    • Design and oversee bench scale projects
    • Work on and lead cross-functional teams
  • Provide day-to-day support for RTK’s water treatment systems.
  • Support RTK’s processes and environmental department from a water perspective (quantity and quality).
  • Promote and set an example for RTK’s safety culture

  • Understanding of laboratory setup and practices required to properly evaluate water processes such as DO, pH, jar test, CL2 residual, turbidity, color, hardness, TSS, TDS, fecal coliforms and total coliforms
  • Understanding and experience with process and drinking water systems
  • Understanding of drinking water regulations and standards
  • Understanding and experience with environmental science principles
  • Must have experience with advanced control systems utilized in water treatment and distribution industry
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Strong safety and environmental focus
  • Prioritize schedule and work tasks and complete work within specified time periods and deadlines
  • Research tasks as assigned
  • Enter data or information (MS Word and Excel) into PC or other keyboard device
  • Basic data analysis and manipulation skills
  • Resource management skills

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Utah Division of Drinking Water Treatment II certification is preferred however a minimum of Treatment I will be required within 12 months of hiring.

Training: MSHA, continuing education units required for Treatment I certification
