Suicide Prevention Certified Peer specialist
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Suicide Prevention Program Team Leader, the Certified Peer Specialist role is focused on developing genuine relationships with individuals in need coming to the program, building a sense of community and engaging in social practice within that environment. He, she or they will also provide a wide range of supports needed for individuals to successfully move towards goals. Their primary role is to help improve outcomes in people's lives. It is expected that this team member displays the utmost professionalism and integrity while executing the responsibilities below.
KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coaches peers on coping skills development
- Assists individuals in the pursuit of recreational activities such as exercise programs, sports, martial arts and other physical activity enterprises
- Complete Wellness Recovery Action Plans WRAP, safety, crisis intervention and relapse prevention plans
- Identify the treatment services clients should receive based on severity of stage of change, immediate needs and recommend treatment objectives for the consumer’s treatment plan; working in conjunction with the team
- Use motivational interviewing, recovery and trauma-informed approaches when delivering peer services
- Involve family and significant others in the treatment with the team
- Complete progress notes collaboratively and ensure progress notes are available to be read in the daily organizational meeting
- Provide individual peer support and wellness counseling, harm reduction counseling based on motivational interviewing
- Maintain and generate reports to measure performance and quality of work set by the department.
- Communicate regularly with clients, parents, support networks and other linkages
- The role will require significant multi-tasking in a fast paced, challenging environment
- The role will require field-based work, on call coverage, and a willingness to work flexible hours.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
High School Diploma or equivalent in addition to the required coursework for the certification
New York State Certified Peer Specialist or provisional certification
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED / LANGUAGE PREFERENCE
- Experience working with community resources, partnerships, clients and families
- Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective
- Must have expertise in coaching peers on coping skills development
- Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to work with diverse cultural, educational, social and economic families
- Experience with diverse populations and age groups (children and young adults)
- Bi-lingual is preferred
- Must exude positive attitude
- Experienced in suicide prevention strategies
- Able to remain flexible and work as a generalist in addition to a specialist
COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Strong computer skills are required. The ability to use Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are critical. The knowledge or ability to learn software programs including use of data and trends to inform clinical practice
*This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a 37.5hour workweek
