What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nutritionist - or - Registered Nurse position at Rock Island County Health Department?
With regular consultation, the nutritionist plans and provides nutrition education and counseling for the department's diverse client population. The nutritionist also acts as a resource for the department, its clients, and the community in the area of nutrition and food service. In the WIC program, nutritionists and nurses are also referred to as CPAs or certifying professional authorities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides and evaluates nutrition needs and services.
Plans and conducts nutrition and food service educational programs for clients, staff, and the community. Uses a variety of teaching techniques to reach a wide range of learning styles and students.
Assists in providing nutrition advice to clients and allied health staff of public health and related agencies.
Maintains cooperative relations with health professionals, civic and community groups, and others concerned with food and nutrition.
Reports and summarizes activities regularly. Assists with the preparation of reports to the appropriate entities.
Conducts assessments and determines nutritional risk.
Through client contact, creates a desire for clients to expand their nutritional knowledge. Collect data on the relationship between dietary factors and health and disease.
Assist clients with individual needs associated with nutrition-related grants.Assist clients by referrals and allows them to accept responsibility for their lifestyle and promoting their health.
Maintain client and department confidentiality
Maintains clinical charts, records, and reports on clients' condition. Performs data entry as needed.
Promote and assist with the services of the department to clients through the County or Mobile clinics.
Meet and maintain OSHA standards
With proper training, routine medical procedures for related programs are carried out.
Assist manager with special projects and assignments to meet the goals of the public health department as required by grants.
Facilitates effective working relationships with a variety of community and governmental agencies, including professional, individual, and associations.
Assist with quality assurance activities of the health department as required by grants.
Oversees clinic supplies and equipment and notifies supervisor of repair or replacement as needed.
Participate as appropriate in all public health emergency operations activities.
Perform other duties as assigned that are reasonably related to the scope of these essential duties.

Qualification and Requirements:
Education:
Registered Dietitian:
a) An individual with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an accredited nutrition program and valid current registration with the Commission on Dietic Registration.
Or
Nutritionist/Dietic Intern:
a) An individual with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in an accredited nutrition program (e.g., Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition).
b) A registration–eligible dietitian who has received written approval from the Commission on Dietetic Registration to take the Registration Examination but has not completed it.
Or
Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR):
a) Graduate of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) approved Dietetic Technician Program with an earned Associate Degree and proof of current registration.
b) It is strongly recommended that DTRs have experience or coursework in maternal and child health, maternal and child nutrition, lactation, nutrition assessment, and nutrition education.
c) The DTR may function in the WIC Program under the direct, on-site supervision of a Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist.
d) Per IL WIC PM AD 11.7, the DTR may function as a CPA assistant.
e) It is recommended that the supervising Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist conduct and document quality assurance activities of each DTR per IL WIC PM AD 11.7.
Or
Registered Nurse:
a) An individual licensed as a professional nurse under the Illinois Nursing Act who can provide proof of current registration with the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
b) It is strongly recommended that R.N.s have experience or coursework in maternal and child nutrition, lactation, nutrition assessment, and nutrition education.
Or
Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Health or Home Economics field with an emphasis in nutrition:
a) It is strongly recommended that the individual have experience or coursework in maternal and child nutrition, lactation, nutrition assessment, and nutrition education.
b) Prior approval from the Department is required.
Necessary Skills:
Basic computer skills, including data entry and program-specific systems.
Ability to utilize team concepts in providing public health services.
Ability to greet and converse with a diverse population of clients.
Ability to promote nutritional education in a variety of settings with a variety of clients.
As requested, provides technical assistance on nutrition and food service management to group care facilities, and prepares evaluations of operations.
Ability to keep records accurately, and make charts, reports, observations, and understand reports and data.
Public speaking skills.
Basic knowledge of the public health program's organization, content, and goals.
Ability to write clear and concise reports, correspondence, and procedures.
Problem-solving skills in a variety of situations.
Working knowledge of community resources available.
