Job Summary 

Employees in this class perform entry-level work of routine difficulty in the operation and maintenance of the County's Water Plant in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. Work involves processes such as super pulsators, ozone generation and disinfection, and generation of hypochlorite. Through on-the-job training, the Water Treatment Plant Operator Ill becomes increasingly proficient in operating the plant in both automated and manual modes. Employees work varied schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is checked for accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Essential Functions

Monitors the operational activities of the water treatment plant and reports any problems to the supervisor. Collects and analyzes water samples.

Collects and interprets data from manual readings and automated systems and makes adjustments to the chemical feed systems and plant processes as appropriate. 

Keeps daily records of plant operations and maintenance actions. Check reservoir levels, daily pressures, and flow totals.

Reports inventory of plant supplies and equipment as needed. Performs preventative maintenance of plant equipment.

Perform necessary sampling and tests to ensure compliance with the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environmental Protection Division (EPD). 

Monitors tank levels by controlling water flows. 

Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

Knowledge of State and federal laws concerning water, water sampling, and water treatment. 

Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance of water plant pumps, equipment, and facilities. 

Knowledge of the Rockdale County water system. 

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions used in the handling of hazardous chemicals and operation of power tools, mowers, pumps, etc. 

Skill in oral and written communications. Ability to work independently.

Ability to read and interpret plans and operation manuals. 

Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences, including but not limited to section staff and management. 

Ability to demonstrate equipment operations and proper repair techniques. 

Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, reach, grasp, finger, and feel in order to perform a variety of job tasks. 

Ability to work in confined areas. 

Ability to lift objects weighing over 60 pounds. 

Ability to use tools requiring a high degree of dexterity. 

Ability to operate pump controls, forklifts, compressors, and crane lifts, pass a fitness test, and be certified to use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and supplied air systems for entering hazardous areas. 

Ability to distinguish between shades of color when performing laboratory analysis.

 Working Conditions 

Work is performed both inside and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Hazards associated with the operation of power tools and equipment, working around high voltage pumps, and chlorination equipment are present. Appropriate safety equipment must be worn at all times.

Minimum Qualifications 

  1. High school diploma or equivalent. 
  2. One (1) year of experience in water treatment plant operations. 
  3. State of Georgia Class Ill Water Treatment Plant license or ability to obtain within 24 months from date of hire or promotion to this class.
  4. Must possess a valid Georgia Drivers License
