Job Description and Profile
Under the supervision of the Mental Health Professional (MHP) or Clinical Supervisor, the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) will support Rural Nevada Counseling (RNC); the Agency by providing exemplary client services to Agency clients. The PSS provides Peer-to-Peer Support Services that promote interventions designed to reduce social and behavioral impairments and restore clients to their highest level of functioning. The PSS is an individual that has a shared understanding through personal experiences and has been successful in the recovery process from mental or behavioral disorders and/or or substance misuse. The PSS is recovery-oriented, person-centered, relationship-focused supporter to provide the clients with their experience, strength, and hope. The PSS assists clients to live, work, earn and participate fully in their communities. The PSS must have the ability to assist during crisis situations and interventions. The PSS processes Intake Applications of Agency clients to receive RNC mental health and/or substance misuse services. The PSS must possess Certification and/or successfully complete Certification within six (6) months of employment. The PSS is a qualified individual who possess the skills and abilities to work collaboratively with and under the Clinical Supervisor and Direct Supervision of a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) and Office Manager.
Reports Directly to: Site Office Manager
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide mentoring and peer support services for Agency clients that may include children, adolescents, and/or adults with substance use disorders and/or behavioral disorders
- Work closely with and be a part of the clients’ treatment team and other individuals in the community to engage clients in appropriate services and resources
- Assists to stabilize the client and during crisis situations and interventions
- Provides preventative care assistance
- Promotes client engagement and personal encouragement, self-advocacy, self-direction training and peer mentoring
- Documents Services and interactions within the agency’s EHR
- Provide one-on-one appointments on a weekly basis
- Participates in all required trainings and attend continuing education classes as required
Education, Qualifications and Experience
- Pass FBI Criminal background check
- Pass any drug testing as required by the Agency
- Peer Support Certification, or successfully meet and pass Peer Support Certification requirements within six (6) months of employment
- Must be over 21 years old.
- Minimum high school diploma or GED
- Personal history as a consumer of mental health and/or substance abuse disorders and must be drug and alcohol free for a minimum of 2 years
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and community partners

- Ability to follow all privacy and confidentiality policies, practices, and laws
- Must be a citizen of the United States or is lawfully entitled to remain and work in the United States, proof of citizenship or proof that an applicant is able to work in the United States.
