Construction Materials Laboratory Technician

S&ME is seeking individuals with a passion for laboratory materials testing. If you are eager to contribute and make an impact early in your career, then come join our Construction Services team in Charelston, SC as a Geotechnical Staff Engineer and help us provide engineering solutions to our clients.


What You Will Do:

As a Construction Materials Laboratory Technician, you will perform routine laboratory materials testing services, under observation of more experienced technicians and professionals. You will be learning electronic reporting software and where to find testing requirements. You will be responsible for reporting test results in a logical and complete manner, after review by others and successfully communicating field and laboratory testing results with Construction Services Project Management staff, contractors, and clients.

  • Laboratory sample receipt and processing
  • Compaction testing of soil
  • Physical characteristics testing of soil and aggregate
  • Compressive strength testing of soil, rock, concrete and other cementitious material
  • Daily use of Metafield®, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems, for recording of testing results
  • Calibration of field and laboratory equipment to industry codes and standards
  • Performance of laboratory testing in compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications

NOTE: While the primary responsibilities of this position are performed in the laboratory, testing and observations on construction sites can be required, based on workload and project needs


Who You Are:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing), using the English language
  • Ability and willingness to prepare for and pass applicable certification examinations such as ACI Strength, NICET Soils, etc.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Traveling out-of-town (may include overnight) for assignments as necessary.
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary.

This is a full-time position with competitive pay based on experience.
