Sacramento Heart & Vascular Medical Associates is one of Northern California’s foremost specialty groups in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. We have an immediate opening for a full-time Medical Billing Specialist, seeking employment in a fast-paced environment. This position works out of the main office (centrally located in Sacramento, CA).
Role and Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Billing Specialist (Medi-Cal) will provide billing support to the Billing Department. The job scope includes full billing cycle support in the execution of tasks related to Medi-Cal billing, and cross functional billing support as needed to Billing Department. Should have knowledge of billing operations & procedures; participates in quality assurance. Follows protocols according to established billing standards in accordance with Sacramento Heart & Vascular Medical Associates (SHVMA) Billing Department.
Functional Billing Area (Medi-Cal)
- Execute full cycle Medi-Cal billing process.
- Knowledge of insurance eligibility website to include Medi-Cal and all other insurances including Medicare, private insurance, Medi-Cal GMC’s.
- Current knowledge of insurance plans and rules (HMO, PPO, Medi-Cal GMC products).
- Ability to interact with patients via telephone and in person as required.
- Utilizes critical thinking skills to ensure that billing information is accurate and entered in accordance with company and insurance guidelines.
- Provides regular updates to the Revenue Cycle Manager and/or Billing Supervisor regarding productivity reporting as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to apply billing knowledge of medical terminology, and high proficiency of general medical office procedures, including HIPAA regulations.
- Ongoing knowledge documentation and update of appropriate billing resources required forms and key contact persons.
- May be required to interpret for patients and staff on an as needed basis.
- Insures client patient confidentiality.
- Knowledge of Medi-Cal fee schedule, insurance billing guidelines.
- Other duties and/or special projects as required.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- HS Diploma or GED program; 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience consisting of 2-3 years in medical billing preferred.
- Proficient computer skills required; electronic medical record (EMR) experience desirable.
- Use of online reference database services.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of HIPAA, federal and state regulations regarding the release of information.
- Working knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 and 10 codes, HCFA 1500, UB04 claim forms, HIPAA, billing and insurance regulations, medical terminology, insurance benefits, and appeal process.
- Knowledge of healthcare policies for all clinical practices and applicable laws and regulations governing proper clinical practice; ability to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations.
- Attention to detail, able to prioritize workload.
- Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Demonstrates effective communication and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office and Patient Management software.
- Overtime or weekend work could be required, as needed.
- Bilingual preferred.
Working Conditions
Office setting, with moderate noise level. Hybrid remote/office setting available upon successful completion of a 90-day probationary period and excellent or superior review.
Physical requirements
Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Requires sitting for extensive periods of time with occasional standing and or walking. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 10 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by SHVMA.
