Shelter Advocate

Purpose: To provide trauma informed advocate support services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in an emergency shelter setting, by supporting the mission, vision and values of the SAFE on Main.

Responsibilities: Make appropriate assessments of batterer’s lethality and victim’s level of danger, assists clients with safety plan development, decision making, and determines appropriate referral and resources.

Ensure that all services are provided through a trauma lens and are client-focused, while maintaining a strict practice of confidentiality.

Provide information to clients regarding legal options and resources, including how to utilize law enforcement, file child support, file Crime Victim’s Compensation claims and register for VINE.

Enter all client-related information and documents into database, and other tracking systems within 72 hours of client contact.

Assist in training volunteers, interns, and new staff members on Shelter daily functions and services.

Provide special population advocacy for racial, cultural, ethnic, LEP, disabled, immigrant, gender-based, and LGBTQ as needed and as it relates to the civil and criminal justice system.

Comply with all agency requirements to assure safety and best practices are applied, providing survivors with appropriate care while in the shelter.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree preferred and previous experience working with domestic violence population.

Experience and knowledge in utilizing trauma informed care

Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to work both independently and in coordinated team settings.

Strong analytical skills to problem solve, make decisions, and provide crisis intervention support and services.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including respect for all aspects of an individual’s identity, ability to resolve conflict, clear personal and professional boundaries, and ability to work collaboratively within and outside of the organization.

Commitment to respecting individual differences, self-determination, and serving a diverse population.

Ohio Driver’s License with good driving record

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
