Child Advocate – Forensic Interviewer

Reports to: Child Advocacy Center Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY

The Child Advocate is responsible for providing advocacy, crisis intervention, and forensic interviewing for

victims of child abuse and non-offending caregivers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

(Duties are illustrative and not inclusive. Individual assignments may vary.)

  • Take Intake Calls for the CAC.
  • Perform and/or schedule forensic interviews as needed, including arranging for other team

membersto be present during the interview.

  • Bring new referrals needing therapy or other servicesto weekly staff meetings. Keep log of

referrals and the disposition/outcome.

  • Enter data about cases referred to the CAC into the case management database system.
  • Track cases from adjudication to closure.
  • Gather and tabulate statistics on all victims of crime referred to the CAC for reports to funding

sources including VOCA and NCA, and to use in securing grants and other funding.

  • Provide information and case management to victims of crime and their families, including

assistance in applying for Victim Compensation and referrals for and assistance in obtaining

other needed services.

  • Attend monthly multidisciplinary task force (MDT) meetings. Act as facilitator for MDT meetings,

if needed. Keep team members informed of new cases and developments in existing cases.

  • Provide follow-up on services for cases brought up at each MDT meeting.
  • Provide coordination and collaboration with the solicitor’s office, DSS, law Enforcement and medical

staff.

  • Inform families about the status of criminal proceedings and provide support as needed.
  • Provide, or arrange for, court preparation services for children having to testify in court.
  • Provide regular follow up with child abuse victims and their family. Provide counseling referrals and

medical exam referrals as needed.

  • Assist in organizing child abuse awareness community events.
  • Coordinate with other advocates and staff members.
  • Attend staff meetings, resident reviews, in-service trainings, and specialized training and meetings

as assigned.

  • Participate in the on-call and back-up on-call rotation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or a related field and at least four years of

forensic interview experience

OR

A master’s degree in social work, psychology, or a related field and at least two years of experience

working with child abuse victims.

The preferred candidate will also have training and experience in working with multidisciplinary teams,

the court system, and in performing forensic interviews.

Must complete a minimum of 26-hours domestic violence/sexual assault training and all other agency

trainings as assigned. Must complete ChildFirst South Carolina to serve as a forensic interviewer.

Licenses/Other Requirements:

Valid driver’s license. Must have access to a vehicle with valid insurance. Criminal Background

History, Sex Offender, and Child Abuse clearances required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of: (at entry)

  • Exemplary customer service skills, including dealing effectively with the public, donors, and

other agency representatives through all forms of communication.

  • Teamwork and developing consensus.
  • Creative and innovative techniques for performing assignments.
  • Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; business correspondence formatting.
  • Time management with the ability to redirect when needed.
  • Computer applications related to the work include Microsoft Office Professional Applications.
  • Standard office administrative practices and procedures, including the use ofstandard

office equipment.

Skills in: (at entry)

  • Perform basic research and prepare reports and recommendations; Oversee projects or

programs.

  • Organize own work, coordinate projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on

assignments with a minimum of direction.

  • Ability to effectively collaborate with others in support of Safe Passage’s mission and values.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, superiors, the general public, representatives of public

and private organizations and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
