POSITION TITLE: Lead Registered Nurse (RN) GRADE: 6
RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
DEPARTMENT/SITE: Nursing / Saginaw or Bay City
STATUS: Non-exempt; hourly.
All the criteria-based duties and standards within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department/site and SPSI.
JOB SUMMARY
The lead nurse will plan, lead, manage, develop, and coordinate all medical clinic aspects of the organization. The lead registered nurse supervises medical assistants and registered nurses. The lead nurse will ensure that the medical staff is assisting both individuals and families in coping with complex physical or mental health conditions. The lead nurse will oversee and perform injections, answers question, obtains authorizations, and corresponds with pharmacies. It is important to be keenly aware of all services provided within the clinic and throughout the agency.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
LEAD NURSE
- Actively and productively run individual, team, all supervision and meetings at least once monthly.
- Respond to routine and emergency contacts from clients and/or staff.
- Openly acknowledge difficulty in managing any particular case and seek support and supervision.
- Immediately report critical issues and work to direct supervisor to develop an intervention plan.
- Support and attend where possible agency events or initiatives, and the goals of the agency strategic plan.
- Establish and oversee administrative procedures to meet objectives set by boards of directors or senior management.
- Direct activities of professional and technical staff members.
- Evaluate the work of staff and students to ensure that programs are of appropriate participant eligibility, program requirements, and program benefits.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports, such as budgets, personnel records, or training manuals.
- Participate in the determination of organizational policies regarding such issues as participant eligibility, program requirements, and program benefits.
- Establish and maintain relationships with other agencies and organizations in community to meet community needs and to ensure that services are not duplicated.
- Review and conduct interviews for the team and complete hiring process with human resources.
- Research and analyze member or community needs to determine program directions and goals.
- Act as consultants to agency staff and other community programs regarding the interpretation of program-related regulations and policies.
- Ensure clients are being seen and evaluated by nurses’ staff according to policy.
- Work with leadership to develop ongoing policies and procedures for the program.
- Run ongoing reports to ensure all contracted agency policies are being implemented.
- Complete annual performance appraisals, ongoing time off requests and timesheets/invoices.
- Provide leadership and guidance to assigned nurses. Identify learning opportunities, provide effective coaching and feedback and develop corrective action plans as appropriate.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of department billing codes and ensure all billing codes are utilized appropriately and efficiently.
- Ensure availability and operation of necessary clinical equipment and supplies in all internal medicine locations. Responsible for ordering all clinical supplies ongoing.
- Promotes and monitors regulatory agency standards and customer service expectations for the practice in all aspects of nursing.

NURSE
- Engages in and develops trusting relationships with all staff, vendors, or clients to enhance employee employment satisfaction.
- Abides by company rules and policy/procedure as well as helping with mission, vision and values of SPSI.
- Attend all mandatory staff meetings, facility in-services and staff development activities as scheduled.
- Accurately record relevant client/vendor contacts and messages as well as communicates it with the staff it affects.
- Assists employees with support so that it affects our clients in a positive way.
- Works efficiently and effectively using EMR systems required such as Phoenix, Smart Care, Sentri.
- Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of clients and employees record information as well as maintain SPSI’s code of ethics.
- Completes all required documentation according to agency policy and procedures.
- Work to continually improve skills seeking training in areas where needs have been identified.
- Perform an in-depth mental and/or physical health analysis of the client.
- Develop a detailed plan of action to meet the client’s needs, set goals, and find the necessary resources for the goals.
- Keep comprehensive records of clients’ progress throughout the process, including every call, referral, and home visit.
- Assist clients with psychological and social development and rehabilitation.
- Address clients’ questions regarding psychiatric services and medications and contact psychiatrist on behalf of clients.
- Schedule psychiatric services for case management clients and work with case managers in the scheduling process.
- Coordinates referrals for blood work, monitor clients’ vital signs and coordinate with care with staff and psychiatrist.
- Administer intramuscular medications or staff TB-Tests. Provide results or updates to the human resources department.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical records consistent with SPSI, SCCMHA and BABHA standards.
- Accurately chart observations on assigned clients using correct charting format and terminology.
- Assists in coordinating individual treatment planning including aftercare and recovery support services for each client.
- Maintain your credentials and required trainings to satisfy your licensure and/or insurance otherwise immediate suspension of employment will be needed.
- Maintain valid car insurance, driver’s license, and car registration always otherwise immediate suspension of employment will be needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
MARGINAL JOB DUTIES
- Works collaboratively to train all new staff as assigned based on the need of the department as needed.
- Immediately report critical issues and work with appropriate staff to develop an intervention plan as needed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Associate degree or bachelor degree in nursing or related field.
LICENSURE: Valid driver’s license and registered nurse license in the state of Michigan required.
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of one to three years’ nursing experience in a mental health/substance use setting preferred. Familiarity with DSM V and diagnostic techniques preferred.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Medium; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
HOURS OF WORK: Full-time, flexible and varied. Schedule may vary Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
TRAVEL: Reliable transportation is required. Local travel throughout service area is required with possible occasional travel between SPSI locations. Some out of service area travel may also be required. Reimbursement in accordance with SPSI policy.
