Job Summary : The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports the genetic counselors and other clinicians with administrative functions, including information gathering, creation of pedigrees for upcoming patient appointments and providing clinical information for insurance pre-authorization. This role will participate in the coordination of care both prior to and following genetic counseling sessions.
Minimum Education : Bachelor's degree in biological science, molecular science, or related field.
Licensure, Registration and / or Certification : None
Work Experience : None. Experience within a healthcare environment, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Effective interpersonal written and oral communication skills. Proficiency using computer software applications, specifically Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to organize and prioritize work utilizing strong analytical and time management skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities with competing deadlines. Ability to maintain professional and courteous during highly stressful and fast-paced situations.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities : Prepares patient charts with all needed documents and pertinent pathology / medical reports. Contacts patient and / or medical providers to obtain documents as needed. Confirms all needed information needed for test ordering has been submitted. Triages genetic counseling appointments ensuring that urgent cases have priority dependent upon their medical management requirements. Discusses insurance coverage and cost of genetic counseling appointment and testing with patients. Provides clinical information for insurance pre-authorization for genetic tests ordered by geneticists or genetic counselors. Assists genetic counselors to schedule follow-up / disclosure visits. Provides follow-up letters to patients regarding key information reviewed in their genetics appointments. Assists with patient notification of negative results as directed. Answers and resolves routine phone or e-mail inquiries. Supports creation of workflows and primary operational tasks.
Decision Making : Independent judgement in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.
Working Relationships : Works directly with patients and / or customers. Works with internal and / or external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
