Minister of Children Job Description

Job Title: Minister of Children

Job Description

The children’s minister will serve as a key leader in the spiritual development of children (birth through 5th grade), helping shape and oversee ministries that are safe, engaging, and rooted in the Gospel. This role goes beyond Sunday programming—it’s about creating an environment where children are known, loved, and discipled, and where families are supported in their journey of faith. This person will report directly to the Senior Pastor, with general oversight by the Personnel Team.

The full job description is included in Appendix A.

Why This Role Matters

We have a vibrant and well-established Preschool and After-School Program. However, it is crucial to grow our congregation’s children’s ministry; we are looking for new, young families with children attending our church services. While our Preschool and After-School programs have seen growth over the years, our congregation’s children’s ministry has been declining. Data show that at least 50% of children enrolled in these programs do not have a church home. However, these figures do not necessarily match Sunday worship attendance.

Families in the Prospect area are actively seeking a church that can nurture their children spiritually. This is a vital area of ministry, one that cannot be overlooked. Our next Children’s Minister will play a central role in rebuilding a dynamic, Christ-centered ministry that serves both our congregation and the surrounding community.

By establishing this role, we can accomplish the following goals:

  • Offer safe, spiritually rich, and reliable children’s ministries
  • Build strong relationships with families inside and outside the church
  • Lay the foundation for long-term children’s discipleship
  • Support the church’s broader mission of growth and community outreach
  • Position St. John Community Church for continued growth in the next season

Ministry Objective & Expectations

The core objective of the Children’s Minister is to share the love of Christ with our church family, especially our children, and to reach into the surrounding community with the life-changing message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is not a peripheral role; it is central to the mission and long-term health of St. John Community Church.

This position carries a clear mandate: to faithfully disciple children, equip families, and cultivate a thriving ministry that is visible, missional, and deeply connected to the life of the whole church. It requires full commitment, spiritual maturity, and strategic leadership.

Non-Negotiable Expectations:

  • Whole-Church Integration: Be intentional in connecting and aligning the various ministry programs that serve children and families—including Preschool, After-School, Awana, and Upward—into a cohesive and Gospel-centered strategy. These ministries must not function in silos, but as a unified effort to raise up disciples from the earliest age.
  • Full Participation in Church Life: The Children’s Minister is expected to be highly visible and relational across all areas of church life. This includes regular Sunday worship attendance, participation in church-wide events, and active engagement with families and volunteers.
  • Missional Mindset: Maintain an outward-facing posture, always looking for ways to welcome unchurched families, connect them into the life of the church, and help them grow as disciples of Jesus.
  • Conational Leadership: Live and serve as a co-laborer in Christ, not just as a program director but as a spiritual leader who models Christlikeness in word, deed, and relationship.

Development & Accountability:

To ensure ongoing growth and alignment with the mission of St. John Community Church, the Children’s Minister will meet regularly one-on-one with the Senior Pastor. These meetings will serve two primary purposes:

  • Develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) tailored to the individual’s ministry strengths, areas of growth, and leadership trajectory.
  • Support the Children’s Minister’s personal walk with Christ, with intentional discipleship and spiritual direction as part of the rhythm of leadership.
