POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Child Nutrition Supervisor, the Kitchen Assistant will stock, prepare, and serve all food and beverage items and maintain quality food according to state regulations. The kitchen assistant will maintain a clean kitchen and good relationships with teachers, assistants, and other YMCA staff members. The kitchen assistant will provide a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA's core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Stock, prepare, and serve all food and beverage items for the Early Learning Centers.
- Maintain a clean and safe kitchen and storage environment.
- Perform janitorial duties, including cleaning, moping, and sweeping designated areas.
- Maintain acceptable standards in the Food Service areas based on the State of Kansas, OSHA, USDA, and CACFP regulations.
- Follow all assigned schedules, menus, and operations.
- Provide exceptional customer service by greeting all participants, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and consistently demonstrating professional conduct.
- Responds to challenges with possible solutions promptly.
- All other duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 16 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
- Experience in assisting and preparing food for groups.
- Must be knowledgeable and willing to take classes regarding food preparation and food regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a positive relationship with children, employees, members, and guests.
- Strong communication skills required.
- Ability to work independently and follow specific instructions in a fast-paced environment.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and meeting deadlines.
- Use good judgment and discretion within the department and assignments.
- Follow all safety requirements of the Salina Family YMCA and Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
- Certifications: CPR/First Aid within 30 days of hire (Training opportunities available).
- TB Test within 30 days of hire.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must regularly lift and move up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally move up to seventy-five (75) pounds in the form of supplies or equipment.
- Able to sit, stand, and bend to perform appropriate tasks.
- Must be able to move at an appropriate pace to respond to emergencies.
- Follow all safety requirements of the Salina Family YMCA.
- May be required to stand for extended periods of time.
- Work in different temperature environments.
