Hourly Compensation: $41.49

 

PURPOSE

Settled in the award-winning San Diego Convention Center, the Journey-level Electrician performs the installation, modification, repair, and maintenance of electrical apparatuses, equipment, and systems. This includes the day-to-day maintenance of Corporation’s electrical systems to ensure equipment is operational and complies with applicable regulatory/code requirements and best practices.

This is a Union position with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 569, AFL-CIO.

 

CANDIDATE DESCRIPTION

The candidate must be a highly motivated, detailed, results-driven individual who works collaboratively with the staff of all levels throughout the organization. This person can manage multiple priorities and cooperatively and enthusiastically switch between responsibilities at a moment’s notice. Will collaborate with various internal departments throughout the facility to understand and fulfill the organization’s material and service requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs skilled electrical repairs, servicing, installation, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance on main building power distribution systems, motor control centers, and building lighting systems; responds to calls for emergency services in response to electrical malfunctions.
  • Inspects, repairs, installs, services, and maintains electrical systems including conduit systems, lighting and power circuits, transformers, generators, air-conditioning units, control equipment, switches, and related electrical devices.
  • Repairs and replaces defective or worn electrical parts in motors, generators, pumps, controllers, switches, and other equipment.
  • Inspects, isolates, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical malfunctions using various testing instruments.
  • Coordinates with event electrical contractor(s) for electrical room and site access; performs electrical work necessary to support event requirements.
  • Works with stakeholders as needed to plan layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations.
  • Performs routine inspections on equipment such as infrared scanning and earth continuity testing.
  • Documents all work and assets in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Verifies completed work for conformance with requirements of all applicable building standards/codes.
  • Inspects work performed by contractors to ensure work is completed per specifications and building code requirements.
  • Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions with management oversight.
  • Cleans, maintains, and services various tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Makes or facilitates updates to various drawings and documentation when needed to reflect current systems/configurations.
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and Title 24 Building Code.
  • Follows maintenance and repair procedures including preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
  • Demonstrates an intermediate or above knowledge of low and high voltage electrical systems, electrical upgrades, and repair work.
  • Complies with all Corporation safety and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
  • Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training, and hazard assessments.
  • Applies all applicable OSHA and related local safety requirements to all assigned work.
  • Reviews electrical inventory to ensure adequate stock of common electrical items and identifies items for purchase.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY

While there are no direct reports to this position, this position may provide guidance to various staff and other electrical personnel as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of full-time experience in all phases of journey-level work. Qualifying experience must include commercial or industrial wiring, installation and repair of electrical conduit systems. Experience in residential electrical work only is not qualifying.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Excellent verbal and written communications skills.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building drawings, specifications, shop drawings, schematics, manufacturer’s specifications, electrical studies, and other reference material. Ability to read and understand various construction/maintenance contracts, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to effectively, with professionalism and courtesy, discuss technical information and respond to questions from individuals or groups of employees, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of numerical representation, including whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of technically diverse instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to apply logical thinking to identify and explain problems, collect data, and establish fact, and create a valid conclusion or resolution to problems. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have a valid California driver’s license (non-resident students and military must have a valid driver’s license from their U.S. state of residency). Successful completion of a state-accredited four or five-year Electrician Apprenticeship Program or has at least as many hours of on-the-job experience as would be required to graduate from such apprenticeship program (in addition to applicable journey-level work experience requirements outlined above).

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Possesses strong communication and teamwork skills to adapt to changing circumstances. Able to problem solve and negotiate to achieve best results using critical thinking and analytical skills. Robust knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as ERP systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work from an elevated platform lift (such as a scissor or boom); handle or feel; reach; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to be stationary. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee must be aware of and use proper personal protection equipment (PPE) necessary to safely complete the assigned task.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; confined spaces; and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  Ability to work Monday through Friday to provide appropriate support and interaction to employees and other internal departments. The Convention Center is a 24/7 operation; therefore, hours and days outside of the standard work schedule may be needed.
