Established as a community non-profit in 1972, The Center provides targeted programs and services to the full diversity of the San Diego LGBTQ community. The mission of The Center is to enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, immigrant, and HIV communities for the betterment of our entire San Diego region. Our vision is to create a Center and Center culture where every person feels and knows that they are welcomed, valued, and supported. As the beacon for our regional LGBTQ community, we actively recommit to being a more vibrant, bold, innovative, safe, and modern center each day than the day before. The Center is sex-positive and provides advocacy and critical health and social support services to support our community members through all stages of life, focusing on our deeply held values of equity, social justice, and client-centered, trauma-informed care. The Center currently has over 90 staff working at five facilities across San Diego County.

The Center opened the Sunburst Youth Housing Project in 2006 to its first cohort of transitional-age youth who were living on the streets or in other areas not meant for human habitation. It is a 23-unit permanent supportive housing program that serves some of the most vulnerable youth, some who live with severe mental illness, HIV, and/or who struggle with drug abuse. The Sunburst Youth Housing Project is in the East Village neighborhood in San Diego and is close to San Diego City College.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of Youth Housing Services, the On-Site Resident Advisor is responsible for fostering a safe and community-oriented residential environment. The On-Site Resident Advisor lives on-site, in a one-bedroom apartment and is primarily responsible for crisis management, enforcement of resident responsibilities, monitoring building activity, and responding to building emergencies after normal business hours.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Resident Support:

  • Provide resources and support to residents.
  • Promote empowerment of residents and a community-oriented residential environment.
  • Respond to crisis situations, contacting internal and external resources in a timely and effective manner.
  • Reminding residents of resident responsibilities related to lease and occupancy agreements.

Record Management and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate documentation and complete reports in a timely manner.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor and other stakeholders, including maintenance staff and external parties.

Building Support:

  • Report building emergencies such as building access, plumbing, electrical, fire, or flood in timely and effective manner.
  • Help to maintain the safety and well-being of residents by regularly reporting non-emergency building maintenance needs to maintenance staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education and/or Experience: Must have familiarity with life experiences common to youth who have experienced housing instability.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is required.
  • Computer/Office Equipment Skills: Must be comfortable working in PC/Windows-based environments.
  • Other Qualifications:
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
    • Must demonstrate competence in working with diverse populations. Those with lived experience as a member of a historically under-served community (i.e., low-income, communities of color, LGBTQ communities, immigrant communities, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.
    • Must demonstrate competence in using strength-based, trauma-informed, and positive youth development approaches in service delivery.
    • Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and auto insurance.

preferred QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and/or Experience: 1-2 years of experience working with people experiencing homelessness, foster care, and juvenile dependency systems.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish.
  • Other Qualifications: Experience managing crises and implementing de-escalation techniques.

WORK LOCATION:

  • On-site, this is a live-in position.
  • Location in the East Village Neighborhood of San Diego

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Compensation: The pay range for this position is $20.50 - $21.50/hour and is commensurate with experience. The position will receive use of an unfurnished one-bedroom apartment as a credit toward wages earned and will not be required to pay any additional rent. This is a Part-Time, Regular Non-Exempt position.
