Supervises and manages the officers assigned to the booking post; oversees the booking process and classification of incoming prisoners for proper housing assignments; trains and advises detention officers in proper booking procedures; provides oversight and evaluate their performances; trains and assists detention officers with the proper processing and release of prisoners; keeps all booking records up to date and properly maintained in the computer database; performs other Detention Officer duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED Certificate from an accredited institution and one (1) year of demonstrated detention/corrections experience that provides the individual with a broad knowledge of various posts and assignments within a detention facility. Knowledge of Booking procedures and Documentation.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to obtain a valid New Mexico driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
- Detention/Corrections Certification in the State of New Mexico;
- Certified or have the ability to obtain Certified Jail Officer (CJO) Certification within one year of hire.
- Other licenses and certifications may be required within a specified time period after hire/promotion.

This position is subject to bi-annual background checks in accordance with Sandoval County Detention Center Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Part 1/C108, Chapter: Personnel, Subject: Employment Process / Background Investigations, PROCEDURES, Post-Employment, 4.; and FPBDS A.9.6 (periodic).
- Coaches, trains and motivates staff; coordinates and/or provides staff training; and manages employee relations; provides general advice and counsel to staff; assists with and/or develops developmental work plans for staff; and recommends corrective actions, discipline and termination procedures as appropriate/necessary.
- Supervises and coordinates schedules of booking operations staff to ensure that all assigned employees are properly performing their duties as prescribed by management ensuring the safety and welfare of employees, inmates, and the general public at all times.
- Supervises and performs the intake and release procedures of new Detainees as necessary; collects finger prints, takes pictures, searches for and looks up Detainees criminal history files, collects personal and demographic information on each Detainee, determines Detainee classification for proper housing assignment, inputs fingerprints into Live scan machine, and obtains medical information.
- Accurately records and/or verifies any money the Detainee carries into the facility; enters the monetary amount into their Detainee account for use by the Detainee for commissary supplies and to bond out.
- Works from standard policies and procedures, training and background to ensure that all details are accurately captured and reported in reports; ensures all records are properly routed, filed and maintained in accordance with approved recordkeeping procedures and regulations with the awareness that records may be used as evidence for lawsuits and court hearings.
- In the event of emergencies, assumes responsibility and takes control of the booking area until properly relieved by higher authority; coordinates and assists other supervisors in the event of an emergency to manage crisis or unusual conditions at the facility.
- Conducts facility headcounts; ensures booking files are completed; completes Detainee disciplinary reports, log book and staff communication forms.
- Interacts with and observes Detainee behavior; conducts strip and/or pat search of Detainees when necessary or as protocol requires; looks for contraband items in the pods and cells while conducting walk through inspections.
- Responds to other officers in the facility whenever a code is called for help due to a fight or an officer needing assistance.
- Operates a computer; takes pictures; answers telephone, makes legal and bond calls for the Detainees as needed.
- Performs other detention officer duties as assigned or directed including assisting with other officer’s post assignments as necessary such as relieving staff for lunch and other breaks; and front desk duties.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
