SC Steel, LLC was established January 2, 2018, as a subsidiary of FabSouth and acquired the assets of SMI-Owen Steel Company, Inc. on April 1, 2018. SMI-Owen Steel Company had owned the business since 1994 when they acquired it from South Carolina Steel Company. The Upstate South Carolina facility has been in operation at this location since 1952.
Job Overview
An Associate Estimator trains under an assigned Senior Estimator/Estimator until they develop the necessary skills, competence, and job-related experience to complete a steel takeoff efficiently and accurately. The goal for an associate estimator is to gain a thorough understanding of steel fabrication and the estimating processes through performing accurate steel takeoffs, communicating with vendors, assisting estimator/sales rep on bids.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Trains under guidance of an assigned Estimator/Sr. Estimator
- Assists Estimator/Sr. estimator and/or Sales rep in preliminary project document review
- Reviews/Studies architectural and structural drawings
- Reviews/Studies project specifications (specifically division 5 & 9)
- Reviews/Studies project scope sheets (if provided by customer)
- Prints/downloads drawings and specifications
- Assists estimator/Sr. estimator with vendor communication on scope and/or bid intentions
- Assists estimator/Sr. estimator in performing structural steel take-off (utilizing Tekla, Bluebeam, excel)
- Develops understanding of proper labor code input for each line item
- Ensures proper finish code is assigned to each line item (primer type, galvanized, no primer)
- Ensures takeoff is broken out per bid form (if applicable) or estimator request
- Print/review any addenda documents upon notification
- Print/review any RFI document release upon notification
- Develops & assembles documentation acquired during takeoff (ie specific exclusions, inclusions, fabrication assumptions, AESS requirements, seismic qualifications)
- Develops thorough understanding of Tekla Fab codes & labor operations required for accurate takeoff
- Assists in updating/maintaining vendor database
- Assists Estimator/Sr. Estimator in takeoff importing or direct input into Tekla
- Assists Estimator/Sr. Estimator with erector information sheets and sends out to preferred erectors. (see bid alert)
- Attends bi-weekly sales meetings
- Attends pre-estimate & pre-bid meetings as requested by estimator/Sales rep
- Attends project kickoff meetings as scheduled by project management
Education/Training
High School Diploma or GED; Technical degree preferred
