What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation Design Engineer position at SCJ Alliance?

We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic entry- to intermediate-level transportation design engineer to assist our transportation engineers with design plans and elements such as traffic analysis, signal and lighting design, and roadway planning as we develop and execute a wide variety of projects out of our Lacey office. Our transportation engineering work is varied, detail- and specification-dependent, and we welcome new opportunities and challenges. We tailor our work to the individual needs of our clients, their projects, and their communities; it often entails inquiry and exploration to identify optimal strategies, recommendations, and outcomes.

What you’ll be doing

  • Interesting and challenging work that builds communities.
  • Originating and developing design concepts. We’re looking for someone who can assist engineers and project managers in planning and design solutions and then using AutoCAD or Microstation to bring those ideas to life.
  • Managing drawings and providing calculations. Using appropriate design criteria and technical manuals, you’ll perform design calculations as well as prepare and revise drawings from rough sketches, mark-ups, or general engineering and design information and put the finishing touches on them with labeling, layering, and sheet layout.
  • Site visits and observations. We want you to get out of the office on occasion to walk and photograph the sites you’re designing.
  • Supporting project managers and senior engineers. You’ll be assisting with meeting project schedules, managing project budgets, and achieving company quality goals.
  • Ensuring project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately.


What you bring

  • A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
  • EIT certification.
  • Experience and proficiency in design work.
  • Generally, 2 to 4 years or more of progressively responsible drafting and design experience.
  • AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience
