The School of Psychology, Sociology and Rural Studies invites applications for a Professor of Practice within our criminology program. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible, nine-month, non-tenure track position tailored for professionals who are committed to bridging the gap between theory and practice in the field of criminology. As a Professor of Practice, this position will bring real-world expertise and experiences to the classroom, providing students with the skills and insights they need to excel in their future careers. This role will be a key contributor to our growing criminology program, guiding students in their pursuit of knowledge and excellence. Start date of August 2024. This faculty member is supervised by the Director of the School of Psychology, Sociology and Rural Studies. The School of Psychology, Sociology & Rural Studies offers undergraduate majors in Criminology, Psychology, and Sociology; undergraduate minors in Criminal Justice, Mental Health Services, Psychology, and Sociology; and a Master’s degree in Community Development.  South Dakota State University promotes access to and opportunities for all to receive the benefit of and participate in education, research, and service and is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to this land-grant mission of access. RESPONSIBILITIES:Teach courses in our undergraduate Criminology major and Criminal Justice minor programs. The successful applicant will teach courses related to Policing, Corrections and Criminal Investigations as well as develop and deliver courses in area of professional expertise.  Participate in creating and implementing curriculum with clear and assessable student learning outcomes.Service to the School of Psychology, Sociology and Rural Studies, College and University. BENEFITS:The university is part of a dynamic community for families, students, young professionals, and retirees, which offers an abundance of attractions and activities. South Dakota State University offers a wide range of excellent benefits including medical, dental, and flexible benefits, retirement plans, compensation packages, paid holidays, and vacation leave.  Employees also have access to internal and state-sponsored training as well as reduced tuition for state-supported courses at all State of South Dakota academic institutions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Completion of a Master’s degree in Public Administration (M.P.A.), Master’s degree in Business Administration (M.B.A.); Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or Sociology; Juris Doctorate (J.D.); or other terminal degree in a related field.10-plus years of law enforcement experience.Potential to teach courses in the areas of federal law enforcement, policing, criminal court processes, corrections, or criminal investigations.Experience working with vulnerable populations.Excellent written communication skills.Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.Must be authorized to work in the U.S.  Sponsorship is not available for this position. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience teaching at the university level and/or training law enforcement officers.Expertise in federal law enforcement and/or tribal law enforcement and/or policing and/or criminal court processes and/or corrections and/or criminal investigations.Expertise in intelligence and security supporting law enforcement and/or experience with federal crimes.Potential to develop additional courses related to area(s) of professional expertise.APPLICATION PROCESS:South Dakota State University accepts applications through an online employment site.  To apply, visit:  https://yourfuture.sdbor.edu, search by the position title, view the job announcement, and click on “apply for this job.”  This system will guide you through the electronic application form.
