Job Summary/Purpose:
The Director of Finance is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing financial strategy, policies, controls, and systems to ensure organizational sustainability, optimal efficiency, and alignment with SdLR’s mission. This role ensures fiscal accountability, leads the budgeting process, and ensures compliance with GAAP, OMB circulars, and nonprofit rules and regulations. The Director reports to the President/CEO and works closely with senior leadership, consultants, board members, and other stakeholders to support strategic financial planning, strategy and operations.
Job Duties and Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management
- Oversee financial record-keeping, including daily bookkeeping, invoicing, bill payment, and payroll processing.
- Reconcile credit card statements and maintain accurate asset management records.
- Develop and implement financial strategies by forecasting trends, aligning resources, and analyzing results.
- Design and monitor organizational financial policies and procedures to ensure alignment relevant to compliance regulations.
- Supervise the Finance & Accounting team, ensuring daily financial operations meet business needs.
- Manage cash flow, credit control, collections, and billing procedures to optimize financial health.
- Provide financial insights and decision-making models to support budget planning and strategic initiatives.
- Monitor and report on investment performance.
- Lead the development of organizational budgets, ensuring department needs are evaluated effectively and accurately.
- Collaborate with Senior Leadership on financial strategy, compliance, and risk management.
Procurement & Vendor Oversight
- Oversee the purchasing process, ensuring annual budget alignment.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate financial records for all procurement activities.
- Manage and cultivate vendor relationships for cost-effective operations.
Auditing and Financial Reporting
- Lead the organization’s annual audit process.
- Prepare and present accurate monthly and quarterly financial reports to Senior Leadership.
- Ensure transparency and accuracy in all financial reporting procedures.
Financial Compliance & Process Improvement
- Develop and implement financial training programs for staff.
- Implement and evaluate financial systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain a strong compliance framework for fraud prevention and financial oversight.
Cross-Functional Support
- Participate in organizational events and outreach projects as needed.
- Provide administrative and operational support when necessary to different functions of the organization.
Staff Supervision and Development
- Complete operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
- Coach and mentor direct reports, oversee performance reviews, and support ongoing professional development.
- Complete supervisory performance reviews of assigned staff timely and accurately
- Monitor employee schedule, time sheets, workloads and use of paid time off and sick leave.
- Support staff with special projects and workflow process improvements.
- Actively participate in staff recruitment, selection, orientation, and training.
General
- All members of the SDLR workforce are expected to support the agency’s community outreach, civic engagement, and recruitment efforts.
- Support the agency’s fundraising objectives, which may include tasks such as active fundraising, grant development, budget creation development, solicitation of donations, agency ambassadorship, informational outreach, and public speaking.
- Commitment to and experience with equity, cultural relevance, diversity, social justice, and disparity reduction practices with persons of color, agencies of color, and underserved communities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, agency partners, and the public.

Required Education, experience and Credentialing:
- Master’s degree (MBA, Master’s in Finance or Accounting)
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in a finance or accounting leadership role.
- Must successfully pass reference checks and background investigations.
- Strong knowledge, understanding and utilization of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and nonprofit accounting standards
- Strong knowledge, understanding and utilization of OMB (Office of Management and Budget) circulars and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, financial planning and data analysis specific to nonprofit organizations
- Expertise in accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, NetSuite, or comparable nonprofit financial platforms.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, macros, data visualization) and other Microsoft products.
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory compliance, nonprofit tax laws, and internal controls
- Experience with fund accounting and managing multiple funding sources, including grants, corporate funding, generated revenue and donations.
- Excellent interpersonal, intrapersonal, and communication skills both oral and written.
- Highly detail-oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to develop and manage financial models, budgets, and expenditure reports.
- Experience in payroll processing and compliance.
- Strong nonprofit finance experience (fund accounting, nonprofit tax laws, etc.)
- Significant experience managing Federal and State grants, including compliance, reporting, and audit
- Proven ability to ensure financial sustainability in a nonprofit organization.
- Experience in managing government or private sector grants, along with tracking
and reporting requirements. - Knowledge of nonprofit revenue streams, restricted vs. unrestricted funds, and
donor reporting.
Preferred Education, experience and Credentialing:
- CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) certification
is highly desirable, other credentials like CMA (Certified Management Accountant) or CGMA
(Chartered Global Management Accountant) are a plus. - Previous experience in nonprofit finance management is a plus.
- Fluent in Spanish both written and verbal (preferred).

Working Environment and Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate computers, telephones, and a variety of office equipment.
- Occasionally reaching, stooping, or kneeling may be required.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
