Job Description
The Equipment Operator reports to the Landfill Foreman. When required, the Equipment Operator may be required to drive and/or perform performance maintenance on the trucks, operate equipment and other such functions.
The Equipment Operator"s work is of moderate difficulty. The work in this position is variable and changes from moment to moment and the work is generally performed and completed without assistance but with some oversight. This position requires the Landfill Foreman to comply with State of Kansas Health & Environmental Regulations and in this regard, this position is a very intense job requiring focus in all aspects.
The Equipment Operator position is a highly responsible job because the Equipment Operator often makes decisions on his own and is entrusted with the safe and efficient running of the Landfill Department in the absence of the Landfill Foreman. This position requires an individual with a high degree of focus, concentration and an ability to pay attention to details.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, this position may be stressful at times and requires the ability of the Equipment Operator to occasionally consider a different course of action of deviate from standard operating procedures to get the job done. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Enforces and adheres to Federal, State of Kansas and local landfill regulations
Assists in coordinating, directing and supervising the work of a large crew, placement of solid waste, compaction and covering of daily disposed refuse and Seward County landfill site
Participates in safety training programs
Exercises responsibility for the completion of activity reports accident and injury reports and equipment condition reports
Analyzes causes of equipment breakdowns to ensure prompt attention to maintenance and repair needs and coordinates activities to attain maximum availability of tractors, scrapers, compactors, motor graders, water tanks, and other equipment used in Seward County landfill operations
Schedules and directs work, maintenance and repair periods for facilities and equipment
Trains and instructs new employees in safety practices, as needed
Confers with Landfill Director and/or Landfill Foreman on related problems and suggest new methods or procedures
Handles and documents internal customer complaints regarding mechanical operations
Performs preventive maintenance and inspection processes for wear on a wide variety of basic and complex equipment including heavy construction equipment, refuse collection equipment and other equipment
Checks various gear boxes and fills, as required; cleans batteries and cables; checks for leaks in coolant, oil, air, lube oils and hydraulic fluids and for wear and cracks on frames and rails; removes and replaces minor and major components on construction equipment; rebuilds pumps and hydraulic systems on heavy equipment; performs metal fabrication and makes repairs with welding tools; makes adjustments to roller, sprockets, tracks, brakes, belts, hydraulic linkage, throttle and selector levels and blade control cables on construction equipment; performs overhauls, repairs and adjustments on engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, distributors and various types of pumps; inspects, adjusts and installs various other parts on vehicles in the shop; may assist with maintenance of refuse collection bins and containers
Demonstrates continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
Works cooperatively with co-workers and the public
Works irregular hours, shifts, weekends and holidays, as required

The Equipment Operator will be required to do complicated tasks: work in day and night environment, able to work outdoors in an extremely hot, cold, dry or wet environment; must be able to walk for long distances on uneven, sloped terrain in all weather conditions; must be able to work in hazardous or dangerous work areas or situations; must be capable of working under stressful situations including operation of equipment in bad weather or other difficult condition, e.g., heights, limited head room; must have acceptable vision for computer duties, performing pre/post trip inspection, driving trucks, operating heavy equipment, must have acceptable hearing to hear on the telephone and in public contact; must have appropriate voice skills to be clearly understood on the telephone, radio and in public contact; must have fine and gross motor skills and full use of fingers, hands and arms to perform computer or writing duties; must have good cognitive skills; must be able to sit for an hour or more, speak, hear, stand, walk, balance, stoop, squat, bend, and/or kneel.
