SPPF M.A.S.T.R. Kids’ Bus Driver
Job Description
The Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to “advance literacy and help close the achievement gap for students in the at-risk community of South St. Petersburg, FL.” All applicants must have passion for the mission as well as a desire to work to develop holistic solutions that create success for children and families in the community. There is also a high need for cultural sensitivity that comes with serving an at-risk population which has developed a healthy distrust of all things viewed as a part of “the system”. A majority of the families we serve are of African American descent so all staff must be comfortable working cross culturally if necessary.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Performs skilled work in the operation of bus or van in transporting students from public schools to the SPPF: M.A.S.T.R. Kids facility or from the facility to various locations for field trips and back. Perform other related tasks to include updating of route and student information, and preparation of bus inspection and accident/incident reports. Work is performed under general supervision and direction. Varied work hours between 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.
As Bus Driver employee shall:
- Transport students from schools to the SPPF: MASTR Kids’ facility following a preplanned route and time schedule.
- Transport students, roundtrip between the SPPF: MASTR Kids’ facility and various field trip locations.
- Inspect bus daily to detect any mechanical condition or malfunction affecting safety or economy of operation and reports any findings to Head of Transportation and Academic Program Leader.

- Assign, in cooperation with Bus Monitor, seats of students on bus or van.
- Instruct transported students in safe riding practices.
- Ensure transported students observe all rules prescribed by law and by the state and local boards.
- Maintain order and discipline, on the part of every transported student.
- Report to the Academic Program Leader repeated/serious misconduct on the part of any student while on the bus or under the driver’s immediate supervision.
- Participate in emergency evacuation drills as planned.
- Attend and participate in conferences and training classes for school bus drivers
- Maintain preparedness to successfully pass, at any time, a reasonable examination concerning traffic laws, state and local transportation rules, and driving skills
- Immediately after any accident or incident involving the bus/van or a passenger, work with bus monitor to prepare a report to be filed with the appropriate transportation or SPPF official.
- Keep the bus clean and neat at all times
- Maintain, as far as practicable, by patient and considerate treatment of all stakeholders, a feeling of security in the safety of transported students.
- Perform other related duties as assigned

- Qualifications
- Must pass DCF background Screening Check
- High school Diploma GED preferred.
- Five (5) or more years licensed driving experience and an excellent driving record required.
- Valid Florida class “B” commercial driver’s license with passenger and school bus endorsements strongly preferred for all drivers, required to operate buses. Valid Florida driver’s license required to drive the Vans.
- Must pass a State mandated annual physical exam, including drug test, and a State mandated dexterity test.
